Shorecrest Adds an “A” to STEM with “Celebrate the Arts”

Weeklong Celebration of Art April 11-16 Features Teach-in with Local Artists, Student Performances, Salvador Dali Exhibit and More

Saint Petersburg, FL, March 18, 2016 --(PR.com)-- With a Nationally ranked VEX Robotics team, graduates matriculating to engineering programs at schools like MIT, and a campus Makerspace that’s made headlines for innovation in teaching, Shorecrest Preparatory School is known for its STEM programs. The popular acronym - which stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math - is widely used in the education lexicon. At Shorecrest, however, school leaders advocate the importance of incorporating a fifth letter to that acronym - “A” - for Art, to make STEAM.

The arts are such a critical component to the Shorecrest curriculum that for nearly 30 years, the school has dedicated an entire week each spring to their study across the pre-k through 12th grade school. Known as “Celebrate the Arts,” the 2016 week long series of events runs from April 11-16 and features a teach-in with more than 40 local artists, music and theatre performances by students, and a campus exhibition of Fruits and Flowers: Dali’s Botanical prints on loan from the Salvador Dali Museum. The week culminates with the Shorecrest spring musical production, “Phantom of the Opera,” with performances on April 14, 15, and 16.

According to Shorecrest Headmaster Mike Murphy, “As much as we’re focused on growing our robotics, engineering and technology curriculum to meet the needs of today’s students, we at Shorecrest put a high value on the liberal arts facets of our program, which include studio and performing arts. Creativity, innovation and risk-taking are top skills that colleges and ultimately employers look for in their applicants. In no other discipline will students so passionately develop those skills than in the arts.”

Celebrate the Arts at Shorecrest begins on Monday, April 11, with events through Saturday, April 16. For a full list of events, performance times and featured artists, please visit www.shorecrest.org/CTA.
