ARTIST Music Academy Student from Perry Hall Wins Top Prize at Prestigious Guitar Competition

Thomas Potts, Student of Dr. Jeremy Lyons at ARTIST Music Academy in Nottingham, Awarded Third Prize at Beatty Classical Guitar Competition

Baltimore County, MD, March 23, 2016 --(PR.com)-- ARTIST Music Academy congratulates Perry Hall resident Thomas Potts for his 3rd place win at the 10th annual Beatty Competition (March 4-6, 2016). Past winners of the Washington, D.C.-based guitar competition for classical guitarists from Maryland, D.C., and Virginia have gone on to study guitar at the college level at institutions such as the Peabody Conservatory. Tom, a student of ARTIST Academy teacher Dr. Jeremy Lyons, participated in the Junior division (ages 13-5) and performed a program in the preliminary round that included “Chiesa di San Francesco” by Mark Anthony Cruz and the challenging Etude Op. 60, No. 8 by Matteo Carcassi. Tom was selected to progress to the semi-final round, during which he performed works by Robert DeVisee, Fernando Sor, Francisco Tarrega, Leo Brouwer, and Matteo Carcassi. All works were performed for memory, and Tom was awarded a plaque, certificate, and $300 for his win.

“Tom started guitar at ARTIST Music Academy with Dr. Jeremy Lyons, and we are really excited to see how he has grown. It’s wonderful to have a student from ARTIST Music and a resident of Baltimore County make such a strong showing at a competition of this level,” says Irene Hulbert, Director at ARTST Music of Perry Hall.

Dr. Jeremy Lyons notes that this experience was a very positive one for Tom, because it allowed him to see that he is easily at the top of his field in terms of musical ability for his age group. He also made friends at the event and is encouraged by it to continue working hard to pursue a career in music.
