)-- Two BTEC Level 3 IT students at North Shropshire College (NSC) are part of the nationwide CAE Student Digital Champions program. Daniel Sayers and Gareth Gavin were asked to evaluate a new teaching application called ‘Plickers’, they saw how useful it could be for lecturers at the College. Daniel and Gareth approached Maths lecturer, Wayne Young, to present their findings. The result was a flurry of ideas and ways in which the application could be put to work in a college-wide program of activities.
The ‘Plickers’ application enables a lecturer to ask a group of students a question, each student has a QR Code, which is unique to them, on a card which has four possible answers A, B, C or D. Each student responds with an answer and the smart phone app records and monitors the results by student, by question.
Maths lecturer, Wayne Young, commented "Not every classroom lends itself easily to the use of technology. Here at North Shropshire College we have a wide range of vocational and practical teaching environments, so an application like this will prove a real boon. By exploring emerging technologies, and thinking beyond the boundaries of their own course framework in the way Dan and Gareth have, means we are creating learning environments that are fun, fast and smart. Having the opportunity to work with Gareth and Dan has been great and I look forward to progressing this project further with them."
NSC’s Information and Learning Technology Lead, Andy Cawthray added "Enabling the effective use of IT isn’t about everyone having the latest whiz-bang gizmo. It’s about encouraging the creative application of emerging technologies and cross departmental collaborations like this are a perfect example of how we can transform and enhance learning, teaching, and working practices for the College as a whole."
