Magazine Publisher Participates in Islands Society Platform on Future of Hilton Head Island

Hilton Head, SC, April 30, 2016 --(PR.com)-- Eric Esquivel, founder and publisher of La Isla Magazine, recently provided the Islands Society’s initial Hilton Head Island Vision 2030 discussion centered on his dreams for what the island should look like in 2030.

The new community platform for those with an interest in the future of Hilton Head Island has been launched by the Sea Islands Society, a constituent of the Islands Society. Hilton Head Island Vision 2030 Voices gives community leaders a voice in discussing the strengths and weaknesses of the ten themes already identified by the Mayor and Town Council.

About Esquivel and La Isla
Esquivel, who grew up cross-culturally in Colombia, South America, and Beaufort County, South Carolina, returned to Hilton Head Island to found the magazine in 1999. In addition to his duties at La Isla, Esquivel was instrumental in founding the Lowcountry Immigration Coalition and serves on advisory boards for several Lowcountry organizations.

La Isla serves the diverse Latino community in South Carolina and Northeast Georgia and was the first Hispanic publication in these areas. By definition, its content “seeks to educate, integrate and empower the audience we serve by providing pertinent and current information about the topics our readers care about.” La Isla is a national award-winning publication whose work helps Latinos integrate into American society, promotes cross-cultural awareness, and helps businesses increase their Hispanic market share.

Asked his vision of Hilton Head in 2030, Esquivel explains, “I envision a place where all can be successful and fully integrated - where being Latino isn’t assumed that you’re Mexican or you’re illegal, but another part of our community. We don’t want to continue to commit the same errors - so that when the next generation of immigrants comes, we know how to do this already and not make the same mistakes.”

Hilton Head Island Vision 2030 Voices
According to James Carroll, managing director of Sea Islands Society, “The goal of Hilton Head Island Vision 2030 Voices is to provide community leaders with a platform to express their own ideas, opinions, suggestions and criticisms on the issues that will most impact the future of Hilton Head Island.”

“For example, Hilton Head Island Vision 2030 Voices will provide a platform for community leaders to explore questions such as how the theme of strong tourism will affect diversity and inclusiveness on Hilton Head Island,” he continues. “Or, how the themes around nature and conservation will affect the mitigation of sea level rise.”
