Checking In: CHD Expert Breaks Down the 2016 USA Hotel Operator Landscape

Despite the influx of Air BNB inventory, the US hotel industry is a growing multibillion-dollar industry, and as hotel operators upgrade amenities, suppliers are presented a wealth of new opportunities if they can find them.

Chicago, IL, May 04, 2016 --(PR.com)-- The hotel and hospitality industry has reached record highs in recent years. With limited new construction, and a focus on redevelopment, occupancy rates for existing hotels are expected to reach a 30-year high in 2016. In advance of next month’s Hospitality and Design Expo, CHD Expert, the Chicago-based foodservice database and analytics firm, has released the latest data around the hotel industry of the United States to help suppliers identify new customer opportunities.

As of April 2016, there are over 72,000 hotels and lodging establishments in the United States. Of these, 57 percent are Independent while 43 percent are classified as hotel chains. (CHD Expert classifies a hotel chain as a brand that has more than 10 units in operation nationwide.)

As hotels now compete with the influx of homeowner offered accommodation options, redesign and redevelopment are popular ways to give an older property a fresh modern look. As of April 2016, 74 percent of hotels and lodging establishments in the USA have been in business for 5+ years, many of which are constantly undergoing renovations to maintain a current offering of amenities. This presents countless opportunities for designers and suppliers alike.

“One way hotel and lodging operators differentiate themselves among consumers is with premium goods and services for their guests,” said Catherine Kearns, General Manager at CHD Expert The Americas. “Business travelers will continue to stay at hotels that make them comfortable while on the road, and this is invaluable. As hotels step up their offerings to compete in a more crowded space, innovative and stalwart suppliers have constant opportunities for new business. Suppliers and distributors who keep on top of what hoteliers provide their guests, and who are in touch with the operators, are poised to win a lot of new accounts.”

In terms of industry growth, international travel to the United States will grow by 4.3 percent annually through the year 2020, according to projections from the U.S. Department of Commerce. Domestic leisure travel also remains consistent, with the U.S. Travel Association finding that this type of travel will keep the overall travel growth in the United States in the positive for the next six months. An average growth rate of approximately 2 percent is expected through August 2016.

CHD Expert breaks down Hotel and Lodging into five primary segments:

1. Hotel & Lodging with a restaurant
2. Hotel & Lodging without a restaurant
3. Resorts
4. Bed & Breakfast
5. Campgrounds

Hotels and lodging establishments without on-premise restaurants make up the majority of the US landscape, at 57 percent. Hotel and lodgings with an on-premise restaurant make up 13 percent of the total landscape. Bed and Breakfast makes up 25 percent.

Both hotels that do, or do not maintain an onsite restaurant, still provide guests with many different food and beverage programs. Whether by simply offering high-quality coffee or tea in the lobby, running a comprehensive room service program, or including complimentary breakfast.

Luxury hotels also cater to guests’ needs outside of food and beverage programs and offer services designed to meet a multitude of needs. Concierge services, laundry facilities, dry cleaning, wedding services, hair salons, grocery shopping services, limo and town care services and others are commonly offered as ancillary services by such hotel and lodging establishments.

For suppliers of these types of luxury goods and services, it is key to understand the luxury hotel market landscape, including where each property is and how many units each brand owns.

Mid-scale to economy scale hotels also strive to provide “home comforts” to keep guests content in their rooms, such as air conditioning, coffee/tea makers, iron/ironing board, bathrobes, minibar, espresso makers, and more.
