Caregivers are among the three most-stressed groups in the country, according to a recent study by the American Psychological Association. While many caregivers report that stress is offset by deep personal satisfaction or by having closer ties to their loved one, the stress can lead to significant health issues.

As a community resource for the senior community, the Austin Senior Resource Alliance is sponsoring a conference dedicated to Austin caregivers.

Attendees will spend the day with industry experts and other caregivers immersed in discussions to support them in their caregiver role. The featured speakers will provide tools, tips and techniques that caregivers can use to ease stress for themselves as well as enhance their caregiving activities for their loved ones.

The keynote presentation is:
Getting the Most Out of Your Conversation with the Physician by Mark Carlson, MD

The ideal patient-doctor relationship is really a partnership, and an important element of this partnership is communication. Open and honest exchange of information is critical to managing good health and identifying health issues as early as possible. This means feeling comfortable asking questions, openly sharing health concerns and taking an active role in the exchange. In this luncheon presentation, Dr. Carlson will share ideas and tips to enhance communications between the patient, the caregiver and the physician.

Dr. Mark Carlson is a fellowship-trained, board-certified geriatrician, internist and oncologist with 30 years of healthcare experience.
