Competition Graphics Helps Fifth Grader’s Dream Come True

CG designs pace car for Dover International Speedway based on child's sketch.

Farmington Hills, MI, May 14, 2016 --(PR.com)-- Competition Graphics makes an 11-year-old’s dream become a reality. Sabrina Morelli dug deep into her imagination and into her box of crayons and dreamed up a colorful design that she hoped would someday cover a raceway’s pace car. She was among 500 students in Delaware who submitted their designs to the Monster Mile Youth Nation Design Challenge to create the new pace car for Dover International Speedway. Imagine the fifth grader’s surprise when, on April 27, 2015, NASCAR Camping World Truck Series Champion Erik Jones showed up at her school -- W.B. Simpson Elementary School – to congratulate her on winning the contest.

"She was excited and she is definitely into art and drawing," said Jones. "It is definitely cool when a kid like that is that creative and gets to see their art on display on a pace car."

“It’s kind of crazy, I really didn’t think I would win,” said Sabrina.

Sabrina’s vibrant design features blue, red and green stripes over a yellow background with orange checkers on the back and a lady bug on the roof.

“When I made it, I pictured it on the track and knew I wanted to make it bright and colorful,” said Sabrina. “I also wanted to add some things to it that people that aren’t from Delaware might want to see so that’s why I drew the state bug.”

Competition Graphics Art Director and Graphics Designer Joe Mikulas who used the student’s idea to develop the design for the pace car said, “It was really cool turning a little girl’s drawing into a reality.” When Mikulas was sent the original artwork, he scanned it and retouched it and set up the files to match Sabrina’s concept. “The difficult part of the wrap execution was setting up the transition areas and making sure the wrap had that ‘Crayola’ feel like her drawing,” said Mikulas.

The JD Sign Company in Harrington, Delaware, wrapped the pace car, putting the design on the vehicle. It took three days to complete.

“I think the colors and concept that she (Sabrina) created will look great on track. My favorite part is either the rainbow stripes on the hood or the lady bug on the roof,” said Mikulas.

The newly designed pace car will take to the track on the weekend of May 13 – 15. Nineteen-year-old Jones, who drives the No. 20 Toyota for Joe Gibbs Racing while competing full time in the NASCAR XFINITY Series, will be one of the stars racing in the NASCAR XFINITY Series Dash 4 Cash race at Dover International Speedway on Saturday, May 14 as part of the upcoming NASCAR triple header weekend at the Monster Mile. Jones earned his third career NASCAR Xfinity Series victory on April 16 at Bristol, in the first Dash 4 Cash race of the season.

Along with having her design featured on the pace car, Morelli also gets a VIP experience at the May 14 NASCAR XFINITY Series Dash 4 Cash race including being on stage for the prerace show.
