)-- The book, "A degree for £2,000?" is a simple introduction to virtual education and how it will alter the way higher and further education is delivered. It has been written to give parents and prospective students a glimpse into the future. It will hopefully start them thinking about the questions they need to be asking before considering which university course to take. The book describes the difference between a virtual campus and a virtual college. It looks at the various types of virtual college that will be created and the business case behind each one.
For the non-technical reader the first chapter includes an explanation of augmented and virtual reality and uses a simple example to explain how they are used in the world of virtual education. The author describes the technology we could be using in the future and how that could change the way we lead our lives, especially for those who frequently use Netflix, Sky etc on their mobile devices.
60% of university students are described as "Next Steppers", this group regard higher education as simply the next step on their career path. Most "Next Steppers" will be studying simple knowledge based degrees, the book argues why these courses would be best delivered using virtual education.
It looks at the costs of running a virtual campus or college and how recent advances in artificial intelligence should further reduce course costs. It considers virtual education as a global service and describes the real possibility of having global syllabi. The appendices contain financial models that show that as the student audience increases the cost per student drops until you are looking at fees getting as low as £700 a year.
The author also identifies how companies could use virtual education to create a completely new recruitment process namely Role Specific Pre-Employment Training. This involves using virtual education to up-skill potential employees before they enter the recruitment process. This has the potential of delivering far more suitable candidates than the typical recruitment agency could and for a similar cost.
Although a lot of research has gone into this book there are two key items that will affect us all. The first is not the fact that 60% of students find lectures boring, but how boredom can seriously lower student grades. Research proves that it is essential that the delivery of education, at all levels, needs to be radically reviewed and revised. The second and most worrying item, identifies the government report that states student debt will rise to a staggering trillion £.
