)-- Robert Weinberg, Daniel K. Ludwig Professor for Cancer Research at MIT, will give a presentation, on “Mechanisms of Malignant Progression of Carcinomas” at GTCbio’s 2nd Cancer Markers & Liquid Biopsies Conference to be held on July 6-7, 2016 in Boston, MA.
Carcinoma cells within primary tumors activate a previously latent cell-biological program termed the epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT), which enables them to acquire many of the attributes of the cells associated with high-grade malignancy, including motility, invasiveness, an ability to disseminate, and a heightened resistance to various forms of therapy. In addition, carcinoma cells that have passed at least partially through an EMT have acquired the ability to enter into the cancer stem cell (CSC) state, which enables them to serve as the founders of new metastatic colonies at distant anatomical sites. Dr. Robert Weinberg’s group have found that, in order to for carcinoma cells to enter into the CSC state, they should pass only partially through an EMT, and that completion of an EMT program places cells in a state in which they lose the plasticity that is associated with tumor-initiating ability -- the operational definition of a CSC.
Leaders in industry and academia will discuss platforms for isolating and studying CTCs. Biomarker sensitivity, stability, validation, and how we can use markers to follow up with patients and improve the quality of life, will also be discussed.
