Ford Street Preserve Wins Florida Stormwater Association Award

City of Fort Myers project to be honored for Outstanding Achievement.

Fort Myers, FL, June 03, 2016 --(PR.com)-- Jonathan Romine, a principal at EnSite Inc., is pleased to announce that the City of Fort Myers will be presented an Outstanding Achievement Award from the Florida Stormwater Association (FSA) for the Ford Street Preserve filter marsh project. EnSite provided landscape architecture for the project, which will be recognized at the FSA Annual Conference, held June 15-17 at the Sanibel Harbour Marriott.

The project was designed to intercept all seasonal runoff from the Ford Canal and divert it through a constructed wetland system consisting of a control structure across Ford Street canal, a settling pond and two planted wetland treatment cells prior to discharging through an overflow weir to Billy’s Creek. Native Florida wetland plants chosen to complete this recreated wetland include cypress, buttonwood and leatherfern.

Paved walking trails and an expanded boardwalk over the herbaceous freshwater marsh improves accessibility for the public. Such features make up about 1.63 acres of the passive recreational facility that help educate visitors about the principles of reducing storm water pollution.

Romine said, “With the unusual rainfall we experienced this past winter, interest in water issues has intensified across Southwest Florida. This award for the city and the availability of the recreational assets at Shady Oaks Park comes at an opportune time for public engagement with these important issues.”

Richard Moulton, City of Fort Myers interim public works director, said, “The city takes pride in our efforts to not only improve the quality of life of our citizens, but to improve the quality of water in the river, and this project does both. This cooperative effort provides a resource that is scenic and functional, while enhancing the quality of the flora and fauna.”
