MiTeGen Announces Expansion of Manufacturing and R&D Facilities

MiTeGen LLC, a provider of innovative consumables for protein crystallization and X-ray diffraction to academic, pharmaceutical, industrial and government researchers around the world, announced facility expansions which include space for manufacturing of a new line of automated high-speed cryocooling devices, as well as dedicated areas for the manufacturing of CrystalDirectâ„¢ crystallization plates.

Ithaca, NY, June 29, 2016 --( The expansions, which double the total size of MiTeGen’s manufacturing space, began late in 2015 and were finalized in mid-May of this year with the commissioning of a class 10,000 clean room and togging area.

“The development of these new products and corresponding production facilities not only marks the beginning of a new phase of manufacturing capabilities for our company, but is a milestone along what has been an exciting journey,” says Ben Apker, Director of Business Development at MiTeGen. “It is wonderful to see all of the long hours and dedicated effort, that started in the early days of our research and custom engineering departments, culminate into full-scale production of two very revolutionary product lines.”

Thin Film Product Production
Along with MiTeGen’s highly successful line of crystal mounts, MiTeGen has become a leader in providing innovative thin-filmed based solutions to crystallography. The expansions enabled MiTeGen to bring thin-film die-cutting operations in-house for greater flexibility, cleanliness, and quality control of products utilizing thin films such as:

MiTeGen In Situ-1™ crystallization plates
MiTeGen CrystalDirect™ crystallization plates
MiTeGen IMISX™ kits for LCP
MiTeGen EZ-CUT LCP sandwich sets
MiTeGen Custom products

MiTeGen's In Situ-1™ crystallization plate (an SBS standard, 96-well microplate) enables X-ray crystallography researchers, who study the atomic-level structures of biological samples, to easily grow, transport and screen crystals of their targets. The advanced features of the low-profile plates, many of which have never before been seen in a crystallization plate, allow for samples to be easily grown with more reproducible conditions, safely shipped to a location for data collection, and sub-sequentially studied via X-ray diffraction in situ. Researchers can then learn about the inherent quality of their crystal samples without having to manipulate, or manually retrieve them, which can often cause undesired changes or damage to the samples. Recently the plates were also launched on SpaceX-8 and used successfully on the international Space Station for experiments in micro-gravity crystal growth. More information at

The CrystalDirect™ crystallization plate (an SBS standard, 96-well microplate) was developed by European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL) and is manufactured by MiTeGen under exclusive license. The CrystalDirect™ plate is designed for use with the EMBL CrystalDirect™ automated harvesting robots and is also excellent for In-Situ data collection. As the number of users benefiting from the CrystalDirect harvesting continues to grow, MiTeGen and EMBL have partnered to ensure a reliable the supply of CrystalDirect™ crystallization plates for those researchers. MiTeGen's line of LCP products which include the IMISX in meso in situ serial crystallography kit and LCP EZ-Cut crystallization kits, have provided scientists at the cutting edge of membrane protein crystallization with tools to enable a new, more streamlined approach to solving challenging molecular structures. “We are excited about the continued expansion of our business that enables us to better meet the growing needs of our customers and strategic partners,” says Rob Newman, CEO of MiTeGen. “By bringing certain operations in house, we are much better able to control quality and costs, while increasing our responsiveness to customers.”

CryoCooling Instrument Development and Production
The facility expansions also doubled the research and development space at MiTeGen, enabling MiTeGen’s work on Hyperquenching devices to move from a research mode into a production mode for a major product release early in Q3 of this year.
