CFES Middle Schoolers Spend Four Days at West Point

Eleven CFES Scholars were among 120 middle schoolers from 30 states to participate in the annual Science, Technology, Engineering, & Math (STEM) Workshop at the United States Military Academy at West Point.

Essex, NY, July 02, 2016 --(PR.com)-- Eleven Tampa Bay students were among 120 middle schoolers from 30 states to participate in the annual Science, Technology, Engineering, & Math (STEM) Workshop at the United States Military Academy at West Point, May 24 – 27.

“I flew drones, played with robots, and learned about many other exciting activities,” said Booker Middle School student Olivia Benjamin. “It was an experience I will never forget.”

Benjamin was afforded this opportunity through her involvement with College For Every Student (CFES), a nonprofit that works with schools across the country to help students become college and career ready. The program has exposed hundreds of students from eight Tampa Bay middle and high schools to STEM-focused college and career opportunities over the last three years.

“At West Point, I learned what makes sound waves and played with a homemade hoverboard,” said Booker Middle School student Janiah Gregory.

At West Point, students designed and tested virtual vehicles with instructors from the Department of Systems Engineering, studied projectile motion with an air cannon, went on a solar walk, and learned how hovercrafts work.

“Our primary goal was to have students participate in workshops on a variety of topics to give a survey of possible careers within the STEM fields,” said West Point’s Center for Leadership and Diversity in STEM Associate Director for Strategic Plans & Initiatives Lori Sheetz.

The Tampa Bay middle schoolers enjoyed meeting other students from around the country, touring the facilities, and becoming residential college students for three days.

“The campus itself was covered in beautiful architecture,” said Booker student Hayden Smith. "My time at West Point was extraordinary.”
