)-- Steve Turner, a principal with Solomon Turner PR in St. Louis, spoke to some 100 business owners and executives at the monthly Commerce Bank Small Business Monthly event held June 30, 2016 at the Commerce Bank Center in Creve Coeur, MO.
Turner discussed how a small business can affordably create and execute a marketing and public relations campaign that encompasses all facets of both traditional and social media.
He addressed how businesses need to reach a more diverse target audience of customers who are becoming more mobile and more oriented toward digital media.
“All businesses need content. Proper messaging is essential. Many small business owners understand this but believe they do not have the time, resources or budget to execute a multimedia campaign,” Turner said.
“Today you can write an interesting blog piece, turn it into a news release, link it to your social sites, expand it into a longer form placement for a trade journal or online new site, turn it into a PowerPoint presentation and even make a video on the topic. This can be done relatively inexpensively. The tools are available to make this happen,” said Turner.
Turner cited several examples. This included the original Dollar Shave Club video that cost only $4,500 but has generated some 20 million views on YouTube and spawned a new industry. The business is reported now to be worth around $615 million.
Turner demonstrated how a company that wins an award can turn that information into repurposed content with dozens of uses. The information can be used to write a news release, take photos of the award with staff and management, create a PowerPoint presentation about the firm’s business practices that led to the achievement, and develop an award video. All of these items can be linked through social media channels.
“Businesses need to think in terms of a campaign as opposed to a one time usage of their media. Many companies shoot a nice video, place it on their website and forget about it. Why not post the video on YouTube and your social sites? Then take your key messages from that video and turn it into written content. Perhaps make a slide presentation and a blog. Today you need to reach a very diverse audience in different ways. The right kind of approach can be not only informative, but fun and entertaining while generating great results.”
