New York, NY, July 14, 2016 --(PR.com
)-- FanFunded is proud to announce Arturo O’Farrill’s new project, “The Cornell West Concerto.” The project is a result of the collaborative efforts of four time Grammy winner, Arturo O’Farrill, and award winning author and Grammy nominee Dr. Cornel West. The piece was commissioned by the Apollo Theater in May 2016.
The Cornel West Concerto is a tour-de-force musical and oratorical plea for justice, love, and respect... with text by Dr. Cornel West - based on questions proposed by W.E.B. Dubois at the turn of the 20th Century. Dr. West's inspiring performance with Arturo and the Afro Latin Jazz Orchestra will send chills through you, bring tears to your eyes, and joy to your heart.
“This is genuinely powerful music. These are truly important ideas.”
Arturo O’Farrill, pianist, composer, educator, and founder and Artistic Director of the nonprofit Afro Latin Jazz Alliance, was born in Mexico and grew up in New York City. His debut album with the Afro Latin Jazz Orchestra, “Una Noche Inolvidable,” earned a first Grammy Award nomination in 2006. His next album “Song for Chico,” earned a Grammy Award for Best Latin Jazz Album in 2009. The 2015 release of The Offense of the Drum was yet another Grammy Award winner. Arturo was, in addition, the winner of the Latin Jazz USA Outstanding Achievement Award, and a Cubadisco Award for “The Offense of the Drum” in 2015. Arturo is currently the Director of Jazz Studies at Brooklyn College.
Dr. Cornel West is a Professor of Philosophy and Christian Practice at Union Theological Seminary and Professor Emeritus at Princeton University. He has collaborated with Prince, Jill Scott, Andre 3000, Talib Kweli, KRS-One and the late Gerald Levert. His spoken word interludes were featured on Terence Blanchard’s Choices (which won the Grand Prix in France for the best Jazz Album of the year of 2009), The Cornel West Theory’s Second Rome, Raheem DeVaughn’s Grammy-nominated Love & War: Masterpeace, and most recently on Bootsy Collins’ The Funk Capital of the World.
