Lady Savaj Launches Vegan Eco-Feminist Jewelry Line

New design house creates exclusive handmade beaded jewelry made by Guatemalan women in local villages.

Miami, FL, October 06, 2016 --(PR.com)-- Feminist jewelry design house, LADY SAVAJ, today announced the launch of its first collection of handmade beaded jewelry. The line, consisting of bracelets, necklaces, and earrings, are 100% vegan and created by indigenous Mayan women living in a traditional lakeside village in Guatemala. Founder Arielle Egozi has directly partnered with these local artisans to bring a modern edge to traditional jewelry, not only supporting the women, but carving a space for their culture to shine as well. The brand seeks to cultivate a community that represents and honors the strengths and resiliency of all women - including in the west. Sold exclusively on the LADY SAVAJ website, the pieces range from $87-$216.

Their motto, “Ethical with an edge,” speaks to the design as well as the messaging of the brand. The jewelry line consists of colorful, bold and intricately designed statement pieces that are created with traditional indigenous techniques, yet have a uniquely modern and on-trend place in the market today. Founder Arielle Egozi traveled her way alone across Guatemala, her mother’s home country, to find a cooperative of women she could work directly with, as the violent history of the area has created a culture where women artisans are taken advantage of by their own husbands and fathers who steal and then sell the jewelry to tourists for 500% profit. The money is often spent on alcohol and not shared with the women who become completely financially dependent and must endure abusive homes because they have no way to leave. Precisely because LADY SAVAJ works directly with the women artisans, and pays each of them instead of a middleman, they are able to become economically independent and leave their violent situations while taking care of themselves and their children.

“LADY SAVAJ is so much more than a jewelry line. The pieces are a colorfully beaded channel,” said Arielle Egozi, Founder of LADY SAVAJ. “As a survivor of sexual assault, it is extremely important to me to find ways to mitigate the devastating consequences that violent global histories have forced women to endure. Creating a brand that not only makes the roots of production conscious, but takes it all the way to its marketing as well - that’s the only kind of project I want to be a part of.”

As part of the intersectional feminist movement, the brand promotes body positivity, sex positivity, and gender and racial inclusivity. The brand challenges conventional norms by embracing education on topics such as periods, no shame in sex, and gender fluidity. Moreover, the jewelry line bridges the gap between the struggles and healing of the indigenous women and their own collective and individual rights, with the struggles and healing of the modern woman dealing with, at the core, the exact same issues simply expressed differently in another culture.
