South Windsor Haiti School is Building a Better World Through Education

The leaders of the South Windsor Haiti School are visiting South Windsor on Saturday, December 3rd.

South Windsor, CT, November 24, 2016 --(PR.com)-- Civic leaders from across the South Windsor community have come together to promote a larger goal: The South Windsor Haiti School which helps feed and educate children in earthquake ravaged Haiti. With the help of generous people from around the South Windsor community, the school opened on October 24th, 2011. In 2010 there was a devastating earthquake in Haiti. In the spring, Dr. Saud Anwar went to help make prostheses in order for amputees to walk. He came back to his hometown, South Windsor, CT testifying to the much needed schools in the region.

Rabbi Jeff Glickman of Temple Beth Hillel in South Windsor is head of the South Windsor Haiti School. According to Glickman, "I was moved by his words, and became the first head of the fledgling South Windsor Haiti School. We met beginning in the summer of 2010. I've been there several times since. After trying to rent land and build a school from scratch, we decided to partner with an existing school."

According to the school's website, "The two fold goals of the South Windsor Haiti School are to unite the South Windsor Community in an act of social responsibility and to educate the children of Haiti. We accomplish our mission by uniting the diverse groups in our community towards meaningful discussion and united action." Their mission is to bring diverse South Windsor groups together for meaningful discussion while educating the youth of Port-Au-Prince in Haiti.

"We partnered with Ecole Agape in Lilivois, just outside the capitol. We built two rooms on an existing school. These serve as a preschool classroom and a room for a small clinic." Rabbi Jeff Glickman says, "We raised funds and are now providing for the tuition, uniforms, supplies and lunches for 66 pre-school students -- almost all girls. Some are as old as 11, but can't yet read." At the beginning, 3,000 letters from local children was sent directly explaining the importance of education. Temple Beth Hillel was quite helpful in getting the project started.

Next week, leaders of the school are to return to South Windsor on Friday, December 2nd through Saturday, December 3rd. Marie Michele Darbouze and Chantal Coutard will be visiting Connecticut, Friday, December 2 and Saturday, December 3, 2016. They will be staying at the home of Paul and Elizabeth Wicks in South Windsor to discuss plans for a Teacher Training Session in Haiti in February, 2017. Saturday morning to set aside to discuss concerns along with present and future needs. Early Saturday afternoon, the Members of the South Windsor Haitian School will have an opportunity to meet with them.
