A Blue Suit on New Year’s Eve is Men’s Most Popular Proposal Plan

Eastbourne, United Kingdom, December 16, 2016 --(PR.com)-- Dobell have found that New Year’s Eve is the most popular date for marriage proposals, with 37% of men choosing the date for their very special question. The UK’s number one formal wear store found that from over 1,000 men in relationships surveyed, 6% said they’d instead choose Valentine's Day, Christmas day (3%) or even their partner's birthday (8%).

When asked for the ideal venue to pop the question to their significant other, respondents chose a restaurant above all at 23%, followed by a landmark (19%) and at home with friends and family (15%). Coming in last place for proposal location was at home in private, with just 9% choosing it as their dream spot. Perhaps impatient partners can weigh up the odds of receiving a ring this winter by keeping an eye out for restaurant reservations.

The date wasn't the only consideration for forward thinking fiancées, with men planning their outfit to pop the question. The most popular ensemble was a blue suit, shirt and tie at 62%, followed by a blazer and jeans or chinos at 18%, with just 3% saying they would wear everyday casual wear to propose to their partner. Therefore, it's unsurprising that Dobell have predicted a flurry of sales coming up to the Christmas and New Year weekends- with 21st December being the biggest day of the year for navy blue suits.

Proposal traditions seem to be a thing of the past, with the “three months salary” rule being abandoned in favour of a more budget friendly attitude: 12% said that they would spend only what they could afford at the time, and 21% stating it's their partner’s choice of ring that matters- not the cost. More so, getting down on one knee is no longer a favoured tradition, with an astounding 42% saying they'd give the gesture a miss! The experts at Dobell have also predicted the UK menswear market will sell enough ties on the 21st December to stretch from Edinburgh Castle to Big Ben (349,636 typical 59inch ties, to be exact).

Mike Dobell, director and founder of Dobell, said of the results;

“We were surprised, but not shocked at the results of the survey, as we know from experience that Christmas and New Year are a big time for our formal wear range- mainly because our customers can expect to be attending a lot of parties this time of year! Nevertheless, we are delighted to learn that this time of year is also a romantic one. However, to know that 62% percent men thinking of proposing are going to do so in a smart blue suit, even 5% choosing a classic tux just shows that those planning to pop the question are really taking the memorable moment into consideration. We think this might have something to do with the revelation that 81% plan to have the question caught on camera. We expect to sell 76% more men’s blazers than the rest of the year in the days approaching New Year's Eve- and now we might know why!”

The survey asked over 1,000 males over the age of 18, who are in relationships, about their marriage proposal preferences for 2016/2017.
