The New England Surge Professional Indoor Football Team Announce First Players to Sign Up from Weekend Try Outs

The New England Surge professional indoor football team issued contracts to 14 athletes from this past weekend’s player tryouts. They were also invited to join last year's team at the preseason practice camp next month.

Worcester, MA, January 31, 2008 --(PR.com)-- Roy Lucas, Jr. Owner and Head Coach of The New England Surge of the Continental Indoor Football League, (CIFL), issued contracts to 14 athletes from this past weekend’s player tryouts. On Saturday, January 26, 2008, 49 hopeful athletes came out for a chance to compete for a professional indoor football position with the New England Surge at Team Works in Auburn, Mass. Besides receiving contracts, the 14 athletes also received an invitation to join members of last year’s team next month for the start of the preseason. Roy Lucas, Jr. Owner and Head Coach stated, “I was really impressed with the talent that came to the tryouts. Several that were selected have Professional Arena Football (AF2) experience, and many were top athletes at the college level.”

The CIFL teams have an active roster of 19 players with 2 additional players on the practice squad in case of in season injuries. The 14 finalists will join the 22 players from last year to compete for the 20-member roster. All 22 players from the Surge’s inaugural season are expected back.

In its inaugural year, The New England Surge completed their 12-game regular season at 8—4, and were defeated in the Atlantic Division Conference playoff against the Rochester Raiders, who also went ahead and won the CIFL Championship.

The 2008 season is highlighted by two match-ups against, Atlantic Conference rivals and defending CIFL League Champions, the Rochester Raiders. Also for the first time The Surge will play non conference games against Great Lakes Division foe Flint Michigan and the Miami Valley Silverbacks of Ohio. The Surge home opener will be played on Sunday, April 20th at 2:00 p.m. and its first season game is away on Saturday, March 8, against Lehigh Valley Outlawz.
