DePauw Economics Professor Guides Investors Through Stock Market with New Book

Dog Ear Publishing reviews a new book that helps average investors take on the stock market – and win.

Greencastle, IN, March 09, 2017 --(PR.com)-- When Gary D. Lemon made his first investment in the stock market as a 19-year-old college student, he was hooked. His early years in the market included the usual mistakes made by first-time investors. In his new book, released by Dog Ear Publishing, he shares how to avoid these mistakes – and do well – in the stock market.

Relayed in a conversational tone that sounds like two old friends discussing the market, “Savvy Investing: Strategy for Successful Investing” pares down investing to the basics. The author’s professional and personal experience rings true from the book’s organization to the advice he provides: “Keep costs low and allocate your money wisely between risky and less-risky assets.”

Lemon begins the book by advocating a financial checkup before investing in the stock market, including looking at credit cards and such things as homeowner’s insurance, auto insurance, long-term disability insurance, and life and health insurance. He moves on to what he calls “the language of investments,” breaking down terms so anyone can understand them. Social Security, essential elements of the stock market and specific instructions on how to implement the strategies shared in the book all follow.

He writes that his hope is to offer a set of rules to follow that will help readers earn a higher return than most who use professional money managers. Charts and light-hearted cartoons help illustrate his points, and a glossary further defines terms. With the book, Lemon aims to help everyday investors maximize their returns, spending just a few hours each year on their investment portfolios. As he writes in the introduction, “If you follow the principles outlined in this book, you can avoid the timing mistakes made by typical investors, and over a lifetime you can save tens of thousands of dollars in advisory fees.”

“Savvy Investing” has just been named one of the 75 best investments books by valueinsiders.

Lemon – a lifelong investor in the stock market – is a professor of economics and management at DePauw University in Greencastle. He is also chairman of an investment committee that oversees billions of dollars in scores of mutual funds. He has conducted investment seminars and helped individuals construct investment portfolios. Before joining DePauw, Lemon was a financial analyst for General Electric Co. in Syracuse, N.Y.

DePauw University student Zachary Taylor created the cartoon artwork that accompanies the book.
