Raleigh's Trig Modern Brings the Ply Collection to the U.S. for the First Time

Original Scandinavian design and skilled Latvian furniture manufacturers create molded plywood seating options never before available in America.

Raleigh, NC, March 18, 2017 --(PR.com)-- Trig Modern, the design center and showroom in Dock 1053 on East Whitaker Road in Raleigh, is about to have an exclusive. Owned and operated by Bob Drake, Trig Modern will soon be the only retail dealer in the United States for the Scandinavian Ply Collection -- light, elegant, molded plywood seating options.

“I’ve been courting the Ply Collection for a while now as I so love the design of their chairs," aid Drake, who showcases modern furniture, accessories, lighting, floor and wall coverings only in Trig Modern, from mid-century-modern-inspired inventory to 21st-century lines. "I decided to finally pull the trigger and invest in floor samples. I especially enjoy that no other showrooms have them!"

Headquartered in Riga, Latvia, the Ply Collection combines the sensibilities of modernist Scandinavian design -- functionalism, simplicity, and the use of natural materials -- with the skills of Latvia’s furniture manufacturers. The result is a line of modern, original, wooden chairs that, according to Drake, are suited to all types of applications, from residential to commercial.

Brief History of Molded Plywood Furniture: In the 1930s, modern design luminaries Alvar Aalto, Arne Jacobsen, Marcel Breuer, and Ray and Charles Eames, brought molded plywood furniture to the media’s and the public’s attention. These architects and designers believed that humble, modest plywood that is then form-pressed into one-of-a-kind designs, would make modern furniture available and affordable for the masses -- a central precept of mid-century modernism. Today many of the pieces they designed in the 1930s and ‘40s are modernist icons, such as Breuer’s Paimio Armchair, Jacobsen’s Series 7 dining chair, and the Eames’ award-winning wood and leather Lounge Chair. The originals are displayed in museums now.

Four furniture designers from Denmark and two from Sweden create all of the Ply Collection’s seating options. Most chairs and stools are available in a selection of wood – birch, oak, and walnut primarily – and most are stackable.
