International Artist to Exhibit at the 45th Annual Coconut Grove Arts Festival

Popular Miami and international artist George Rodez, selected for a third consecutive year to exhibit at the 45th Annual Coconut Grove Arts Festival, will be exhibiting his ever popular and sometimes controversial Afro-Cuban/Caribbean Series works of art February 16-18, 2008.

Miami, FL, February 10, 2008 --(PR.com)-- The Coconut Grove Arts Festival is one of our nation's premier outdoor arts festivals. This year's festival will feature over 300 local, national and international artists. Amongst them will be George Rodez at booth 326. Although Rodez exhibits throughout the world, he states that exhibiting in his home town is what he most enjoys.

Rodez describes his work as a mixture of the old with the new, the Cuban and the American, the Caribbean and the African, all rolled up into one delicious palette of colors. Born in New York to Cuban parents, Rodez uses his Afro-Cuban/Caribbean Series to explore his culture and roots. He uses subjects and images that would normally be used in folkloric Cuban paintings and gives them a modern pop-ish twist. Rodez claims that what he accomplishes in creating this body of work is a sense of voyaging back to Cuba, transforming it, and making it fresh and new, as if never touched by its 48 years of stagnation. The works act as a defibrillator bringing back to life the Cuba, B(efore) C(astro), and foretelling of the possibilities of a new beginning for the lost island of ruins.

His paintings reflect the bold and vibrant colors of the stained glass used throughout the Caribbean, and with his signature double-blue backgrounds, his paintings appear to be three-dimensional. They have also been compared to the Panamanian "molas" because of their appearance of being embroidered. All of which are illusions that Rodez states mesmerizes and camouflages the fact that the paintings hold a certain degree of dysfunctionality not apparent to the casual viewer. They are not just beautiful paintings, they serve to tell the story of the more serious conditions in his parent's homeland.

Rodez, who in 2006 was recognized by Congress for his work with South Florida charitable organizations, will also be taking part in the Coconut Grove Arts Festival Visiting Artist Program, which links professional artists with schools in the Miami-Dade County Schools system. This year Rodez will be visiting South Miami Senior High School.
