South Nassau Communities Hospital Named One of 100 Best Hospitals in US for Orthopedics

According to Healthgrades, orthopedic surgery at South Nassau is among the top 10% in the nation - in terms of favorable patient outcomes as measured by data reported to the federal government and compared to some 4,500 other acute care hospitals nationwide.

Oceanside, NY, December 06, 2017 --(PR.com)-- South Nassau Communities Hospital is the only hospital on Long Island to achieve Healthgrades® America's 100 Best Hospitals for Orthopedic Surgery™, Orthopedic Surgery Excellence Award™, and 5-star ratings for Total Knee Replacement, Total Hip Replacement and Hip Fracture Treatment in 2018.

According to Healthgrades, orthopedic surgery at South Nassau is among the top 10% in the nation - in terms of favorable patient outcomes as measured by data reported to the federal government and compared to some 4,500 other acute care hospitals nationwide. Healthgrades is the leading independent, online resource for comprehensive information about physicians and hospitals. Every year, Healthgrades evaluates hospital performance nationally for 34 of the most common inpatient procedures and conditions. The achievements are part of findings released by Healthgrades and is featured in its 2018 Report to the Nation. The report demonstrates how clinical performance continues to differ dramatically between hospitals regionally and nationally.

South Nassau also earned high Healthgrades rankings for patient safety and for women's health, receiving the Healthgrades Patient Safety Excellence Award for two years in a row and the Healthgrades Gynecologic Procedures Excellence Award for five years in a row.

In addition, Healthgrades has named South Nassau as a Five-Star Recipient for Treatment of Pneumonia for three years in a row and Five-Star Recipient for Small Intestine Surgeries in 2018.

"The Healthgrades ranking is particularly important – from a consumer standpoint – because it is completely based on an independent assessment of patient outcome statistics reported nationwide," said Richard J. Murphy, president and CEO at South Nassau Communities Hospital. "The Healthgrades ranking provides independent verification of what we here at South Nassau have known for some time – you can receive world-class orthopedic care right here on the South Shore without having to travel into the city. This is an award of which we can all be proud."

South Nassau also recently received high Healthgrades honors for patient safety and in women's care, receiving the Healthgrades Patient Safety Excellence Award for two years in a row (2016-2017) and the Healthgrades Gynecologic Procedures Excellence Award for five years in a row (2013-2017).

In women's care, Healthgrades recognized South Nassau for Superior Performance in Gynecologic Procedures for five years in a row (2013-2017). The hospital also achieved a Five-Star rating for hysterectomy for three years in a row (2015-2017).

"We are delighted also to be recognized for our high standards and favorable outcomes in women's health and for patient safety," added Murphy. "South Nassau is a place 'where quality matters.' These rankings attest to the fact that our staff works hard to live up to that motto every day."

This is the first year that South Nassau has been named to Healthgrades' list of America's 100 Best Hospitals for Orthopedic Surgery and the fourth consecutive year for achievement of its Orthopedic Surgery Excellence Award. Additionally, this is the fifth consecutive year that South Nassau received the Five-Star rating for hip fracture treatment, second consecutive year for the total hip replacement Five-Star rating and first time that it achieved a Five-Star rating for total knee replacement."

Hundreds of Long Island residents each year turn to South Nassau's Center for Advanced Orthopedics (CAO) to receive comprehensive, patient-centered orthopedic care. South Nassau's orthopedics center, which includes the Long Island Joint Replacement Institute (LIJRI) and South Nassau Shoulder Center, serves the South Shore's long-term need for specialized orthopedic surgical and rehabilitative services.

Orthopedic surgeons at South Nassau use minimally invasive and image-guided surgical technology to repair musculoskeletal injuries as well as to perform joint replacement surgery. The benefits of minimally invasive and arthroscopic surgery include reduced post-operative pain; less scarring; less blood loss and a quicker recovery time after surgery; faster return to normal activities; and a shorter hospital stay.

Knee and shoulder injuries repaired at South Nassau include torn cartilage and anterior cruciate, posterior cruciate and medial collateral ligaments in the knee as well as instability, impingement, rotator cuff or labrum tears and recurrent dislocations in the shoulder.

South Nassau surgeons specialize in the latest advancements in total and partial knee and hip replacement techniques. South Nassau was one of the first in United States to combine image-guided medical technology with minimally invasive knee replacement instrumentation to simplify total knee replacement surgery.

The Center's orthopedic spine surgeons use a range of patient-centered, minimally-invasive surgical approaches that provide short- and long-term relief from debilitating, painful back problems, from herniated discs to stenosis.
