The Heliconia Press Expands Environmental Initiatives

Beachburg, Canada, February 27, 2008 --(PR.com)-- The Heliconia Press, a leading publisher of books and DVDs on outdoor pursuits, is expanding its many environmental initiatives to include 100% recycled materials for all DVD packaging and the sole use of FSC-certified paper for all book publishing.

Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certification is an internationally-recognized designation for paper produced from trees which have been managed and harvested in a socially and environmentally responsible way. Because The Heliconia Press alone publishes more than 60,000 DVD and book units a year, the more environmentally-friendly packaging and paper choices make a big difference. While the new DVD packaging comes at a slightly higher production cost, which Heliconia will absorb rather than passing on to consumers, the company sees the decision as an important part of its business ethic, and will be actively encouraging partner DVD producers to make the switch as well. And while the majority of earlier Heliconia titles were printed on FSC-certified paper, the formal commitment is new.

"In the technology-heavy outdoor industry, our performance demands are so high it is difficult to find products which do not compromise performance while reducing environmental impact. At Eastern Mountain Sports, we are excited to see a DVD production house taking the initiative to invest in green business practices. We're already offering Heliconia titles in our stores because of their content quality and production values; their switch to environmentally-responsible materials simply adds to the appeal of these products," says Brook Burke of EMS.

"As a company that celebrates the outdoors and encourages people to respect and enjoy the natural world, making environmentally-friendly and sustainable choices in our business operations has long been one of our corporate values," says Heliconia's President, Ken Whiting. "We're passionate about finding ways to significantly reduce, and in some cases even eliminate, our environmental impact. We’re continually on the lookout for ways to improve our operations in this regard."

At the more subtle level of daily operations, Heliconia's established best practices include recycling all materials accommodated by municipal services; double-sided printing and re-use of paper whenever feasible; use of compact fluorescent bulbs in all compatible fixtures, and programmable thermostats for more efficient heating; support for telecommuting and carpooling; composting of all organic material, and even an on-site vegetable garden.

About the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC)
FSC is an international not-for-profit organization working to find solutions to the problems created by bad forestry practices and to reward good forest management. The FSC believes that the link between logging and negative impacts such as habitat destruction, water pollution, and displacement of indigenous peoples can be broken, and that forests can be managed and protected at the same time. Forest Stewardship Council certification is one way to improve the practice of forestry. For more information, please visit www.fsc.org.
