Santa Fe Christian Schools Student Receives President's Volunteer Service Award

Solana Beach, CA, June 29, 2018 --(PR.com)-- Alyssa Goodyear, a 12th-grade student at Santa Fe Christian Schools (SFC), has been honored for her exemplary volunteer service with a President’s Volunteer Service Award. This is the third year in a row that Goodyear has achieved this award, as she has had more than 250 logged volunteer hours per year.

About Award Recipient Alyssa Goodyear

Goodyear has been at SFC since sixth grade, her favorite subject is biology and she aspires to become a veterinarian.

At SFC, Goodyear is involved in Chamber Chorale, theater, American Mathematics competitions and the women’s soccer team. Outside of school, she plays club soccer year-round, sings, and plays the guitar and piano.

Community service work is very important to Goodyear and since the start of high school, she has completed over 1,500 community service hours. “It is a passion that I have had since I was younger which really caught fire since coming to SFC. My service projects have been spent working with the homeless and elderly, a mission trip to Taiwan, raising awareness and money for a friend who was battling leukemia, projects for military and veteran appreciation, hurricane relief efforts, and working with animals,” Goodyear said.

Her true passion is reflected in the majority of her volunteer hours, as Goodyear has spent roughly 1,300 hours working in the adoptions department at Helen Woodward Animal Center (HWAC). “Volunteering at the shelter is often the best, most gratifying and fulfilling part of my week,” Goodyear said about her experience at HWAC.

About The President’s Volunteer Service Award

The award, which recognizes Americans of all ages who have volunteered significant amounts of their time to serve their communities and their country, was granted by The Prudential Spirit of Community Awards program. SFC nominated Goodyear for national honors this fall in recognition of her volunteer service.

The Prudential Spirit of Community Awards, sponsored by Prudential Financial in partnership with the National Association of Secondary School Principals (NASSP), recognizes middle level and high school students across America for outstanding volunteer service.

“The recipients of these awards demonstrate that young people across America are making remarkable contributions to the health and vitality of their communities,” said John Strangfeld, chairman and CEO of Prudential Financial. “By recognizing these students and placing a spotlight on their volunteer activities, we hope to motivate others to consider how they can also contribute to their community.”

“Demonstrating civic responsibility through volunteerism is an important part of life,” said NASSP Executive Director JoAnn Bartoletti. “These honorees practice a lesson we hope all young people, as well as adults, will emulate.”

Prudential Spirit of Community Award applications were distributed nationwide last September through middle level and high schools, Girl Scout councils, county 4-H organizations, American Red Cross chapters, YMCAs and Affiliates of Points of Light’s HandsOn Network. These schools and officially-designated local organizations nominated Local Honorees, whose applications were advanced for state-level judging. In addition to granting President’s Volunteer Service Awards, The Prudential Spirit of Community Awards selected State Honorees, Distinguished Finalists and Certificate of Excellence recipients. Volunteer activities were judged on criteria including personal initiative, creativity, effort, impact and personal growth.
