St. Petersburg, FL, September 29, 2018 --(PR.com
)-- On Saturday, September 29, students from Shorecrest Preparatory School will host a student-led Civic Saturday event. Civic Saturday is a national series of events meant to evoke community conversations around democracy, citizenship, and civic engagement. The event will run from 11:30am-12:45pm in the Janet Root Theatre at Shorecrest.
The Shorecrest event will be led by students Brenna Dukes '21, Tia El Masry '20 and Lily Schneider ‘19 with support from faculty sponsor Diego Duran-Medina, Shorecrest Director of Service Learning.
Civic Saturday events each focus on one central question around citizenship. The model of Civic Saturday events follows a similar format nationwide, however the content of each event is entirely up to local event organizers. For this nonpartisan event at Shorecrest, the question is “what is the purpose of civics?”
"Civic Saturday is an event that we've launched as part of an elective class that three of my peers and I are taking," says student organizer Tia El Masry, Shorecrest Class of 2020. "The event will highlight what Civics means to each of us with three very different yet connected speeches by each of the students. We are eager to show students and the rest of community that our generation knows how to take charge and express our values."
The event includes a poetry reading, musical performances, and brief talks from event organizers Dukes, El Masry, Schneider and Duran-Medina. Civic Saturday will close with Civic Circles, small group discussions of the central question and ideas presented.
According to Duran-Medina, "We need to reimagine civics education, and that begins with listening to students with help from our St. Pete community." Diego Duran-Medina was instrumental in bringing this event to the Tampa Bay Area.
Civic Saturday will be held on Saturday, September 29 from 11:30am-12:45pm in the Janet Root Theatre at Shorecrest. The event is free and open to the community.
