LPG Could Save Australian Fishing Fleets

We all know that the rising price of fuel is effecting our lives and businesses, none more so than our commercial fishing fleets. Many are finding that the cost of fuel is so bad they don’t even bother to leave the harbour anymore. Although there have been many diesel LPG systems currently operating on motor vehicles and road transport vehicles for a number of years now, it does seem there has been little attention paid to marine applications; but one company is prepared to change all that.

Newcastle, Australia, March 20, 2008 --(PR.com)-- Green Fuel Systems International (GFSI) has been conducting research into using LPG as an additive to diesel for commercial fishing vessels. The focus of the program is placed firmly on all the safety aspects relating to using LPG as an additive for diesel engines in the marine environment.

Spokesman for GFSI Mark Kilburn explains, “We have been providing diesel additive systems to the road transport sector and for power generation equipment for a number of years now with great success. We believe it is now time the maritime industry needs to take full advantage of benefits our product has to offer. We have seen the average road transport operator reduce his fuel bill by 15% or more. Add this with emission reductions achieved by burning less diesel and you can see the potential for maritime community is enormous.”

Green Fuel Systems International has been conducting both internal and external research into applying its now well respected Dual Phase Induction System (DPIS) to the commercial maritime sector. The commercial fishing environment is probably the harshest conditions that any product or system could be exposed to.

Mr. Kilburn said, “GFSI is well underway to delivering exactly what the maritime industry needs and will shortly conduct sea trials using its new marine electronics package manufactured with the help of Steel River Manufacturing in Newcastle. GFSI has been extremely lucky in forming this partnership with S.R.M as they are specialists in circuit board manufacturer and assembly, so our end product will be fit for purpose.”

Unlike many other companies Green Fuel Systems International also has another enormous advantage over its competitors when designing new equipment for commercial fishing by being able to use the extraordinary engineering talents of CSMU technologies, a sister company which is designing equipment for both the commercial and military aerospace industry.

Mr. Kilburn stated, “We have a very bright group of personnel at our disposal but this extends far beyond our doors. Many other companies have formed partnerships or alliances with GFSI to help us get the best possible product out into the market place.

“These include, APA Manufacturing, which is currently finalising a dedicated marine LPG cylinder for the use with the GFSI system.

“Elgas, a leading LPG supplier who will take care of most the LPG infrastructure needed to allow refueling capabilities.”

GFSI has been working closely with the Australian Maritime College who has been conducting other research involving a GFSI system fitted to a Cummins marine diesel. The purpose of the Australian Maritime College research was to ascertain the performance and emissions benefits that could be achieved by using LPG as an additive.

Mr. Kilburn said, “The research program was able to provide us with conclusive information both good and bad on the performance of LPG as an additive in this type of engine under specific loading conditions. The reason we became involved with the Australian Maritime College in this research in the first place was to identify all the things we had to improve on”

GFSI engineers have since been vigorously using the information gained from the program to make the appropriate changes to both software and hardware.

“Due to research conducted on our system by the Australian Maritime College we have been able to gain a lot of information which will allows seamless integration of our product into the marine environment. We now expect that all the results from the latest round of testing to be completed in a couple of months will be extremely positive,” Mark Kilburn stated.

Green Fuel Systems International has informed that their Marine Diesel LPG System (MDLS) should be in full production by June this year. So it looks like the future will become a lot brighter for those who are now suffering due to the ongoing fuel price hikes.
