Local Student Mathletes® to Compete in Nevada State Math Contest

Reno, NV, March 04, 2019 --(PR.com)-- Thirty-six middle school students from Northern Nevada schools will compete in the Nevada State MATHCOUNTS® Competition Series, the nation’s premier math competition, on March 16th, 2019 at American General Contractors building at 5400 Mill St, Reno. The Northern Nevada state competition has been organized by members of the Society of Women Engineers Sierra Nevada Section.

A total of thirty-six Mathletes from nine local schools will compete. Schools represented are: Abode Middle School – Elko, Clayton – Reno, Coral Academy of Nevada – Reno, Davidson Academy of Nevada – Reno, Mendive – Sparks, Pine Middle School – Reno, Roy Gomm Elementary – Reno, Spring Creek Middle School – Spring Creek, and Swope – Reno.

Teachers and students have been preparing for this prestigious competition since the fall. Students will compete individually and in teams on both written and oral matches. Four state winners will receive trophies and will advance to the national competition in Orlando, Florida on May 11-14th, 2019.

MATHCOUNTS is a national program with the mission to build confidence and improve attitudes about math and problem solving. The program focuses on middle school students, who are at a crucial stage for cultivating their interests and math skills. Without developing strong problem-solving skills, students face an uphill battle in pursuing science, technology, engineering or math (STEM) careers of the future.

The Competition Series will consist of over 100,000 students, representing more than 5,200 schools from every U.S. state and territory, plus schools affiliated with the Department of Defense and State Department.
