Numi Opera Theatre Revives Jewish Composed Opera Censored by the Nazis in Their Debut Season

Santa Monica, CA, April 11, 2019 --(PR.com)-- Numi Opera Theatre makes their debut May 30 and Jun 2 with a revival of Der Zwerg by Alexander von Zemlinsky. On her birthday, a young Spanish princess is presented with a singing dwarf who, having never seen himself in a mirror, thinks himself very handsome. When the truth dawns and the princess spurns him as a mere toy, he falls dead of a broken heart.

Numi Opera’s interpretation of Zemlinsky’s work will include excerpts from Oscar Wilde’s “Birthday of the Infanta,” which this parable of innocence and intolerance is based on. Zemlinsky taught composition to a number of private pupils, most notably the gifted Erich Wolfgang Korngold. This created an inextricable bond between suppressed Jewish musicians during the time of the Third Reich – better known as Nazi Germany. Many, who were murdered in concentration camps, and others, whose freedom and productivity were curtailed, were fated to be forgotten after the war.

“We must now mitigate a great injustice by working to revive and perform the music of those whose 'crime' was to be Jewish, or deemed offensive by, the authoritarian Nazi regime. Their music, I believe, is accessible and relevant. As the child of Jewish immigrants I feel this responsibility acutely.”

For their inaugural show, Numi Opera Theatre has brought on professional opera veterans:
Rodell Rosell (Tenor) as Der Zwerg, The Dwarf
Shana Blake Hill (Soprano) as Ghita, Servant to the Infanta
Oriana Falla (Soprano) as Donna Anna, The Infanta
Roberto Perlas (Baritone) as Don Estoban

Single tickets range from $35-$75 and are on sale online at https://www.numiopera.org/performance-expanded
