BGCMLA Commemorates Ongoing Partnership with L.A. Chargers with Ribbon Cutting of Athletic Field and Teen Center

Chargers’ corporate partner Bob’s Discount Furniture joins ongoing renovations at BGCMLA Watts/Willowbrook and Challengers Clubhouses.

Watts Willowbrook, CA, April 26, 2019 --(PR.com)-- Through a multi-year partnership with Boys & Girls Clubs of Metro Los Angeles, the Los Angeles Chargers have provided a capital investment to improve and enhance the existing athletic field and establish an innovative new teen center at the Watts/Willowbrook Clubhouse while also committing to providing educational enrichment programming. Joining the Chargers in the establishment of the teen center is Bob’s Discount Furniture, who has outfitted the facility with new furniture.

The ribbon cutting ceremony will be held at the Watts/Willowbrook Clubhouse on April 24, 2019 and will include representatives of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Metro Los Angeles, the Los Angeles Chargers, and Bob’s Discount Furniture. In a continuation of the partnership, the Los Angeles Chargers has provided a capital investment to similarly improve and enhance the existing athletic field at our Challengers Clubhouse. The team will move forward with updates and renovations of the teen center at the Challengers Clubhouse for which, Bob’s Discount Furniture will outfit with new furniture.

“We are grateful for the generous investment provided by the Chargers and Bob’s Discount Furniture,” said Calvin Lyons, Chief Executive Officer, Boys & Girls Clubs of Metro Los Angeles. This remodeled center will allow the quality of this facility to match the quality of the services offered at this site. Our youth will now have access to better programming, facilities, and technology, which will lead to greater successes at school, home and beyond.”

The Chargers’ multi-pronged approach with this investment ensures that youth in some of the most consistently under-resourced neighborhoods in South Los Angeles will have access to safe, fun and educational gathering places – both after school and during the summer – where they can build the knowledge, skills, and behaviors to put them on the path for success.

“We’re thrilled to commemorate our partnership with Boys & Girls Clubs of Metro Los Angeles with this ribbon cutting,” said Dean Spanos, Chargers Controlling Owner and Chairman of the Board. “Youth health and fitness are key community initiatives for the Chargers. The field and teen center renovations are just one example of how the Chargers are building healthy communities and helping local youth from under-resourced neighborhoods reach their full potential.”

BGCMLA and the Chargers are working together to reverse the most negative trends facing our youth:

· 1-in-4 children live in poverty
· 1-in-4 students will drop out of high school
· Only half of all youth are in what is considered to be a healthy weight zone

A multi-year effort, the Chargers’ $400,000 investment will be applied in two phases. Initial facility refurbishment and repair – phase one – will provide the foundation necessary to sustain BGCMLA programming for years to come. These facility enhancements will strengthen BGCMLA’s ability to provide quality programs across their three priority outcomes: Academic Success, Good Character & Citizenship, and Healthy Lifestyles. Phase 2 will seek to bolster the Club’s educational enrichment programming and create even more opportunity for youth in these underserved communities to lead safe, productive and healthy lives.
