Nurse Reveals the Complex, Extraordinary World of Nursing in Her Debut Memoir

Dog Ear Publishing reviews a new book that explores how nurses learn to cope with the many challenges they are likely to find in their profession, as well as the courage they have when helping people to heal.

Lanexa, VA, September 19, 2019 --(PR.com)-- There’s a reason people call the profession of nursing a calling – it can be gritty, emotional, disgusting, hectic, harrowing and, if a nurse is lucky, at many times rewarding. Nurse Susan shares what she “saw, felt, smelled, heard, and touched” in her new book, released by Dog Ear Publishing, during her long career in the profession. As she writes in the introduction, “I expect you will laugh, sigh, cry, and perhaps suppress a gag.”

“One Nurse Universe” explores the world of nursing as only someone who has been in the trenches can describe it. Author Susan Turnage spares no one in relaying her adventures. She tells all, from her student nursing days learning how to give patients a sponge bath, to joint vomiting with a patient, heartbreaking stories about special patients who shine a light into the world and revealing tales about her time as a nurse in a jail.

Readers will chuckle at a humorous exchange between the author’s yelled explanation of a suppository to an extremely hard-of-hearing patient and cry at the unexpected beauty when a child battling a deadly illness draws his last breath in her arms. “One Nurse Universe” exposes both the ups and downs of the unpredictable world of nursing and the angels on Earth who choose to make their living caring for those who need it most.

Turnage is a registered nurse as well as a registered yoga teacher and certified yoga nurse. She has clinical nursing experience in pediatric oncology and head injuries, corrections, home health and case management. As a nurse entrepreneur she pursues her passion to help her fellow nurses manage stress via speaking engagements as a certified yoga nurse. Yoga students of all ages and ethnicities will find her teaching weekly chair yoga and healing mat classes in New Kent and Charles City, Virginia.

Her interests are varied, ranging from serving as a game fish tagger for the Virginia Institute of Marine Sciences, to an art conservation technician and creating themed jewelry and driftwood sculptures. She and her husband have two sons and a rambunctious puppy.
