Perla Batalla Headlines Concert for UCI School of Social Ecology’s Compassion Program

Perla Batalla, recipient of the United Nation’s Earth Charter Award for “extraordinary devotion to social and economic justice” and the Premio Fronterizo Award for “healing work in the world,” will perform Oct. 23 at the Irvine Barclay Theatre.

Irvine, CA, October 04, 2019 --(PR.com)-- Event proceeds benefit the School of Social Ecology’s compassion program.

Perla Batalla, recipient of the United Nation’s Earth Charter Award for “extraordinary devotion to social and economic justice” and the Premio Fronterizo Award for “healing work in the world,” will perform Oct. 23 at the Irvine Barclay Theatre.

The Grammy-nominated singer’s show, “Perla Batalla in the House of Cohen,” pays tribute to her friend and mentor Leonard Cohen, the late singer-songwriter whose influential work spanned nearly five decades.

Batalla’s mission of honoring her roots and exposing young audiences to the beauty of music and the Spanish language is ongoing in her outreach endeavors throughout some of the poorest communities in the United States. So, it’s fitting that her concert, sponsored by the Living Peace Foundation, will be the highlight of the first Environmental Peacebuilding Association conference to be held at UCI Oct. 23 through 25.

The 8 p.m. concert will be preceded by an awards ceremony, honoring international peacemakers. Concertgoers are welcome to arrive early and attend the 6:30 p.m. ceremony.

Proceeds from the concert will benefit UCI’s School of Social Ecology and the Blum Center for Poverty Alleviation’s compassion program, which cultivates compassion, empathy, purpose and cross-cultural connectedness among UCI students.

“The world is facing an escalating set of challenges. At UCI we are helping the next generation of students build the skills needed to solve the urgent, complex problems they will face,” says Richard Matthew, Blum Center director and associate dean of the School of Social Ecology.
