Cal Coast Academy to Host Activities for Red Ribbon Week

Cal Coast Academy hosts a campus-wide Red Ribbon Week to support a drug-free lifestyle.

Rancho Santa Fe, CA, October 19, 2019 --(PR.com)-- Cal Coast Academy, a Rancho Santa Fe based college preparatory private school, invites the community to take a visible stand against drugs by celebrating Red Ribbon Week from October 21-25. This year’s celebration will kick off on Monday, October 21, with the theme, “Pledge to be Drug Free.”

“Red Ribbon Week encourages our entire school community to adopt a healthy, drug-free way of life,” said Ms. Jan Dunning, Founder and Principal of Cal Coast Academy.

Red Ribbon Week is the nation’s largest and oldest drug prevention campaign and reaches over 80 million people each year throughout the United States. The campaign raises awareness of drug use and the problems related to drugs facing our youth and community, and promotes a drug-free lifestyle.

In 1985, drug traffickers killed Drug Enforcement Administration Special Agent, Enrique S. “Kiki” Camarena. Shortly after his death, citizens from his hometown of Calexico, California, began wearing red ribbons to remember him and commemorate his sacrifice. The National Family Partnership created the first official Red Ribbon Week celebration in 1988. Since then, the red ribbon has symbolized a continuing commitment to reducing the demand for illicit drugs in our communities.

“Red Ribbon Week gives us the opportunity to be vocal and visible in our efforts to achieve a drug-free campus and community,” states Dunning. “The campaign brings together faculty, staff, students, parents, and community members as we look for ways to keep our kids and local communities drug-free.

“Research shows that children are less likely to use alcohol and other drugs when parents and other role models are clear and consistent in their opposition to drug use and the misuse of prescription drugs.”
