FreemanWhite Completes Design for New Hospice Care Facility

Raleigh, NC, April 23, 2008 --(PR.com)-- Ned Jennings, principal at FreemanWhite (www.freemanwhite.com), an architectural, engineering, interior design and consulting services firm for healthcare organizations in the United States, has announced that the firm completed design of a new 9,800 square-foot hospice care facility for University Health Systems in Greenville, N.C.

The new free-standing facility is currently under construction on 3.5 acres and will include a customized care environment designed to treat terminally ill individuals with compassion and respect. Each of the eight patient suites is purposefully angled to give the patient the largest possible view of their environment, including family members and friends in the adjacent sitting area, and the natural world of the garden outside. French doors open to expand the suite onto the covered porch and into the garden where the patient and family are invited to go outside.

The design focuses on creating a homelike environment for the patient, family, and friends. In each patient suite the wood floors, soft colors, crown molding, raised-panel doors, and attractive furnishings comprise a space that is familiar and comfortable. Display areas around the patient accommodate personal items such as cards, flowers, mementoes, and photographs. The displays also conceal the Institutional necessities of electrical and medical gas outlets.

The inpatient hospice facility is located on the campus of Pitt County Memorial Hospital, which is the flagship hospital for University Health Systems of Eastern Carolina and serves as the teaching hospital for the Brody School of Medicine at East Carolina University. Pitt Memorial, one of four academic medical centers in North Carolina, is a regional resource for all levels of health services and information.

“We are honored to be the designer of the new hospice care facility for University Health Systems,” said Jennings. “This project will enable the hospital to deliver compassionate and respectful end-of-life care for terminally ill patients and assist their family members in coping with a particularly difficult time period.”
