How COVID-19 Has Impacted Academic Research

Dr. Peter Mallow, director, health economics and clinical outcomes research and assistant professor at Xavier University, shares his thoughts on the effect of COVID-19 on the health research community.

New York, NY, November 30, 2020 --(PR.com)-- While the United States and other countries continue to struggle with the devastating effects of COVID-19, the effect of COVID-19 on the research community has been a positive sign to see, said Dr. Peter Mallow, director of health economics and clinical outcomes research and assistant professor at Xavier University: “The sense of unity, how fast and how far we can move forward working together. It’s inspiring.”

Dr. Peter Mallow’s and his colleagues' research linking Centers of Disease Control (CDC) risk factors and COVID-19 patient outcomes1 was recently published in the Journal of Health Economics and Outcomes Research.

The impetus behind the research linking CDC risk factors and COVID-19 patient outcomes sprung from a need to contribute, he said. Back in the spring with COVID-19 rates increasing “we asked what can we do as researchers to contribute to a better understanding of what is happening in our hospitals.”

This research was different from previous research projects, said Dr. Mallow as there were no preconceptions going into the research. “We had little idea of what to look for/not look for because the disease is novel.”

Research times have also been compressed under COVID-19, Dr. Mallow explained. It’s challenging but it’s important to do this research.

The volume of research on COVID-19 has been unprecedented. In just six months, major databases have been flooded with research articles, letters, reviews, notes, and editorials related to COVID-19.

A new study estimates that 23,634 unique published articles have been indexed on Web of Science and Scopus between January 1 and June 30, 2020.2
