Turner Announces Closing Ceremony for Youth Force 2020 Program

Turner Construction Company of New Jersey announces the closing of their two-year community relations campaign, Youth Force 2020 at Vailsburg Middle School.

Bridgewater, NJ, May 07, 2008 --(PR.com)-- Today, Turner Construction Company announced the closing ceremony for this year’s Youth Force 2020 Program will be held at Ivy Hill School in Newark, NJ on May 27 beginning at 9 a.m.

“Turner’s Youth Force 2020 Program allows children to have exposure to the construction industry in a way they would not normally have in the classroom,” said Tom Reilly, Vice President and General Manager of Turner New Jersey. “We are thrilled with all the support we’ve received from administration and students at Vailsburg, as well as our own staff. The students have done a wonderful job and should be commended for their enthusiasm throughout the school year,” Reilly said.

Reilly along with the New Jersey Director of Community of Affairs, school administrators, student participants and a representative from the Newark mayor’s office are to scheduled speak at the ceremony.

The Youth Force 2020 Program is traditionally a selection of a school for a two-year term. This is the final year at Vailsburg Middle School and the process of choosing another Newark school will be announced in the near future.

This year’s program began in Sept. with approximately 40 seventh-grade students. Volunteer Turner employees teach a variety of topics including cost estimation, identification of types of building structures and construction scheduling. Each lesson is followed by a hands-on activity that can be applied to a real-world situation.

“The Youth Force program gets children excited about learning with practical mathematics,” said Scott Wild, Principal of Vailsburg Middle School. “They are always so focused, and see the value and practicality in each lesson all by themselves,” Wild said.

The objectives of the Youth Force 2020 program are to stress the importance and value of “going to school and staying in school,” introduce students to the construction industry as a viable career path and to establish a mentoring relationship with students.

Debora Weaver is a teacher at Vailsburg and has seen first-hand the effects the program has had on the student participants. “The students take ownership and pride in their work. [Youth Force] has given them a level of maturity and sensitivity they didn’t have before,” Weaver said.

Currently, participants are working on their final project and presentation which includes the planning, designing and building of a structure. The final product will be judged and winners will be announced at the closing ceremony.
