Cyber Institute Helps with the Passage of Two Nonpartisan Cybersecurity Bills to Protect the Nation’s Energy Grid

Denver, CO, September 25, 2019 --(PR.com)-- Cyber Institute applauds the passage of the “Enhancing State Energy Security Planning and Emergency Preparedness Act” and the “Enhancing Grid Security through Public-Private Partnerships Act” along with Colorado U.S. Senators Michael Bennet (D) and Cory Gardner (R) who authored the bills with key support from the Cyber Institute. This cybersecurity legislation represents significant steps towards protecting our country’s energy grid from cyber attacks and creates a new program at the Department of Energy (DOE) to provide physical and cyber security assistance to electric utilities (https://www.bennet.senate.gov/public/index.cfm/ 2019/9/bennet-gardner-applaud-passage-of-two-cybersecurity-bills-to-protect-energy-grid-through-senate-energy-and-natural-resources-committee).

“Senate Bill 5240 provides much needed assistance to electrical utilities that lack the tools, capabilities and training resources for conducting their own self-assessments to properly mitigate cybersecurity threats,” said Taylor Vance of the Cyber Institute. “Sharing of industry proven best practices, while collectively advancing the cybersecurity capabilities of all sizes of electric utilities, will especially unify and align the industry towards a more resilient infrastructure.”

“Today, we moved one step closer to protecting our country’s energy grid from a crippling cyber attack,” said Senator Bennet. “When it comes to securing America’s infrastructure from our hospitals and banks to gas stations and water treatment facilities there is no room for politics. We’ll continue to work with Senator Gardner to send these two bills to the President’s desk.” The bills were supported by National Rural Electric Cooperative Association, Ampex, National Cybersecurity Center, the Cyber Institute, Protect Our Power, and the National Association of State Energy Officials.
