Canon Australia has expanded its High Definition product portfolio, with two new high-performance digital video cameras, the XL H1S and XL H1A. Both models support HDV recording and feature an interchangeable lens system.

The two models succeed the multiple award-winning XL H1 which has earned high praise from industry professionals working in the fields of broadcasting and video production since its introduction in November 2005.

The XL H1S and XL H1A, together with Canon’s current professional High-Definition range, provides broadcasters, cinematographers and independent film makers with a full complement of professional, high-quality, low-cost High Definition solutions.

“The XL H1S and XL H1A build on Canon’s High Definition line of professional digital video products already highly regarded by industry professionals for their superior imaging technology and range of features that suit a variety of filming needs,” said Tamara Hohnberg, Digital Video Product Manager, Consumer Imaging Products Group, Canon Australia. “Canon is now offering a full range of affordable HD solutions that give professionals the control they require.”

Incorporating the same outstanding optics and high-performance image processor as other models in the XL-series and supporting the recording of HD-resolution video, the XL H1S and XL H1A boast an updated stylish design and include a range of new features to meet the needs of professional users, such as improved operability through the addition of a manual iris ring, and enhanced customisation for image-quality and shooting-function settings.

Audio Capture and A/V Connectivity
In response to advanced professional needs, the XL H1S is unique to the market place, incorporating an HD-SDI terminal that supports the output of uncompressed video with embedded audio and LTC time code.

Additionally, user-requested refinements in the XL H1S and XL H1A audio capabilities include two-channel audio performance; two built-in XLR terminals with separate audio-input sensitivity settings; the ability to simultaneously record sound from an external microphone and the supplied internal microphone; line output level switching; an audio (manual) limiter; and a new metal headphone jack for reliable connectivity.

Enhanced Image Quality
The Canon XL H1S and XL H1A digital video cameras deliver superior HD image quality, equipped with Canon’s newly developed 20x HD Video Zoom Lens XL 5.4-108 mm L IS III. In addition to a fluorite lens element, which minimises chromatic aberration, the models also feature Canon’s SuperRange Optical Image Stabilization system. Multi-coating enables the lens to correct for a variety of aberrations while an SR coating reduces ghosting to ensure exceptional HD imaging performance.

The models also feature an interchangeable lens system and independent manual zoom, focus and iris rings which can operate simultaneously. The models incorporate three 1/3-inch CCDs with 1.67 million pixel for each primary colour and Canon’s proprietary DIGIC DV II HD digital signal processing chip, making possible the recording and playback of high-resolution HDV 1080i-format video.

The new models also allow users to adjust the focus while zooming so the original subject can be swapped easily to another subject within the same shoot.

Customisable Image Control and Handling
The XL H1S and XL H1A incorporate an expanded array of controls for customising the image, display and operation to match individual needs.

The video cameras pack in 23 types of Custom Presets for recording specifications such as gamma, which determines tonal characteristics, and colour matrix, which adjusts colour during shooting. The model also offers 21 types of Custom Functions to match specific user needs or shooting applications. Custom Display (22 types) settings are also incorporated allowing camera operators to tailor the display to their shooting style.

Interchangeable Lens
Canon’s exclusive XL interchangeable lens-mount system enables users to select the most appropriate lens depending on the shooting situation. In addition to exclusive XL-series video lenses, the system also permits the use of a range of Canon EF lenses for the company’s EOS series of SLR cameras, when outfitted with the optional EF Adapter XL.
