Annapolis, MD, February 03, 2026 --(PR.com)-- Bernard 'Bud' Cole, who served for two years in Vietnam, has completed his new book, “Goin’ to ‘Nam”: a gripping historical tale that follows the fictional David Kagan who serves as a stand-in for the author as he offers his firsthand accounts of major battles during the Vietnam War

During his two years in Vietnam, author Bernard Cole led several amphibious operations on the coast and rivers and was a naval gunfire liaison officer with the Third Marine Division in Vietnam from June 1967 to June 1968, including five months with an infantry battalion and duty at Khe Sanh during the Tet Offensive. He was commissioned from the NROTC unit at the University of North Carolina, then served thirty years in the Navy and taught at the National War College for twenty years. Cole earned an AB in history (University of North Carolina), MA in Chinese history (University of Washington), and PhD in history (Auburn University).

“This book is about sailors and Marines at war,” shares Cole. “The Vietnam War was a traumatic event for the US, evoking the strongest sentiments and action domestically and around the world. A relatively minor sideshow to the Cold War became a major distraction, as more than fifty thousand Americans and hundreds of thousands of Vietnamese died for dubious reasons. [I] was a participant and offers this account of some of the war’s key battles and tragedy. These include amphibious battles fought by sailors and Marines along the coast and on the rivers of South Vietnam. Even more exciting were the battles of the 1968 Tet Offensive, headlined by the ‘siege’ at Khe Sanh, an attempt by the North Vietnamese military to inflict a defeat strong enough to drive the US from the war. It failed because of the Marines on the ground and air power above.”

Published by Newman Springs Publishing, Bernard 'Bud' Cole’s enthralling tale will help readers better understand what this moment in history was truly like for those who were willing to risk it all for their country, unaware of the truth behind the war. Deeply personal and eye-opening, “Goin’ to ‘Nam” is sure to keep the pages turning, leaving readers spellbound while offering a reflection on a war whose lessons still resonate today.
