National Coalition Launches “John Brown America250: Renewing the Revolution” to Reexamine America’s Founding Ideals

America250 roundtable series reconsiders John Brown. Leading scholars, like Dr. Margaret Washington, Dr. Nell Painter, Dr. David Reynolds present Brown in clearer light, with the benefit of historic record. Hosted by Dr. Louis A. DeCaro Jr, the monthly conversations continue through 2026 and beyond.

Torrington, CT, June 20, 2026 --(PR.com)-- A coalition of historians, educators, and public leaders has launched "John Brown America250: Renewing the Revolution" with a national virtual roundtable. The series examines America’s founding promises and the unfinished work of democracy ahead of the nation’s 250th anniversary.

The events bring together scholars and civic voices from multiple states for a public conversation about freedom, citizenship, and how the legacy of abolitionist John Brown reframes the story of America’s founding. “This isn’t simply a monthly roundtable series,” said Daniel Morrison, founder of the John Brown Project and a lead organizer of the coalition. “It’s a coordinated, multi-state reckoning with America’s founding promises and the reality of where we are today.”

The monthly roundtable series culminates in a set of coordinated programs and public initiatives tied to America’s 250th commemoration. Organizers say the goal is historical clarity—grounded in scholarship, primary sources, and civic dialogue. “By centering John Brown—a figure often simplified or sidelined in traditional narratives—our aim is to widen the frame of America’s origin story and invite communities into deeper engagement with the country’s founding ideals,” said Martha Swan, founder of the freedom education and human rights project, John Brown Lives!.

Each roundtable is moderated by Brown biographer Louis DeCaro Jr. and features historians and community leaders, with themes ranging from "John Brown and Abolitionist Women" to personal stories like "Growin up Brown," featuring a 3Xgreat grandaughter of John Brown. Events are open to the public and recorded for broader distribution. The series is organized in partnership with regional historical organizations and educational institutions across several states from California to Connecticut. Additional programming tied to America250 will be announced in the coming months.
