G DATA Tracks Storm Botnet as It Tries to Cancel the Olympic Games in Beijing

Following rumours today about the outbreak of a 3rd World War and an alleged cancellation of the Olympic Summer Games in Beijing, software security research experts at G DATA have uncovered that these messages are the work of the notorious Storm Botnet.

Guildford, United Kingdom, July 25, 2008 --(PR.com)-- By referring to events and breaking news, cyber-criminals are working feverishly to raise the hit rate of infections while at the same time expanding the Storm botnet.

G DATA’s research labs, based in Bochum, Germany, are reporting the distribution of millions of mails worldwide – carrying the subject: ‘Beijing Olympics cancelled, moved to Atlanta’. Furthermore, a line in the body of the mail is announcing the crash of a Boeing passenger airplane in Michigan.

The link included in the mail points to a captured web server which originally belongs to a team of Argentinian industrial psychologists. The website displays a page full of porn videos. The website mentions that a particular video codec is necessary to correctly watch the videos.

Instead of “breaking news“ or porno movies, the malware file (Trojan.Downloader.Win32.Agent.vyi, amongst others) is installed, which will capture the infected system and connect it to the Storm botnet.

Along with the linked and faked web page, attackers have obviously hacked the whole website. When trying to browse the main landing page of the hacked domain, a drive-by-download is initiated: another attempt to install malicious code onto the victims' systems.

G DATA security solutions has detected this new threat and all current users of the G DATA suite of PC security solutions will be protected.
