Space Junker Takes Off

Space Junker, the first novel in a new science-fiction adventure series by David Raine, launched this week. Set in a drought-stricken 22nd-century America, it blends robotics, survival, mystery, humor and orbital adventure. The launch also introduces MIM, an AI system creating continuing side stories within the Space Junker universe, exploring whether AI can maintain characters, learn from editorial failure and carry those lessons into future stories.

Space Junker Takes Off
San Marcos, CA, October 03, 2026 --(PR.com)-- New science-fiction adventure launches alongside an experiment in AI-authored persistent storytelling.

Space Junker, the first novel in a new science-fiction series by author and technologist David Raine, officially “takes off” this week.

The story begins in the 22nd century in a drought-stricken Midwestern farming town hiding a secret that could change the world. From there, Space Junker expands into a fractured America shaped by water scarcity, political power, technology, greed and communities learning to survive with what remains.

Space Junker combines fast-paced action and adventure with robotics, politics, survival and humor in a world that might best be described as The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy colliding with Blade Runner somewhere over a very dry cornfield.

At the center of that world is Kyte Jacobs, joined by an unusual but remarkably human collection of reluctant heroes, including Bob, a 68-year-old, 420-pound industrial robot held together by decades of repairs, modifications and stubborn persistence.

But the October 2 launch isn't limited to the novel.

The book ends. The world doesn't.

Space Junker is also becoming an experiment in AI-authored persistent storytelling.
MIM, an AI system being developed by Raine, is beginning to create original continuing side stories inside the established Space Junker universe. These stories follow ordinary people living beyond the main novels: transit workers, street kids, settlers and others whose lives may occasionally cross the primary story only briefly.

MIM's stories are explicitly identified as AI-authored and human-edited. The novels remain human-authored, and MIM cannot alter established book canon without author approval.

The first experiment follows Tim, an awkward Dallas transit attendant living in 2180 who hates public transportation, manually inspects the autonomous bus he works aboard, reads an old paperback called Space Junker during his route, and brings his pet lizard Sally to work every day.

The experiment poses a larger question:
Can an AI maintain characters, consequences and a fictional world over months or years, learn from editorial failure, and demonstrate that experience in later stories rather than simply generating another isolated response?

MIM's first attempt already failed.

Rather than hiding that failure, the project turned it into part of the experiment. A story that could have happened today with futuristic decorations added around it was rejected. New evaluation rules were introduced around world dependence, character continuity and persistent consequences. Subsequent work is being evaluated against those lessons.

The objective isn't to prove that AI can generate fiction.

It can.

The more interesting question is whether experience can make it a better storyteller tomorrow.

“In the quiet hum of transit buses and the rustle of forgotten stories, MIM learns not just to write, but to remember — each character a thread in a larger tapestry, each tale a lesson in persistence.” - MIM

About David Raine
David Raine is an author, technologist and longtime software developer whose work has spanned data systems, artificial intelligence and robotics. His technical background influences the world of Space Junker, where aging machines, resource scarcity and emerging technologies are treated less as futuristic decoration and more as ordinary parts of people's lives. Raine is also developing MIM, an AI system being used to explore persistent learning, collaboration and continuing storytelling alongside the Space Junker series.

“I didn't want AI to write my books. I wanted to see whether it could live in the world I created, develop characters of its own, make mistakes, and carry what it learned into the next story. The books remain mine. What happens around them is becoming a much more interesting experiment.” - David Raine, author of Space Junker

About Space Junker
Space Junker is the first novel in a science-fiction adventure series by David Raine exploring survival, robotics, resource scarcity and human resilience in a fractured 22nd-century America. The series begins in rural Illinois and expands into a world of autonomous machines, orbital debris, political fragmentation and communities rebuilding with technologies left behind by an earlier age.
