It’s been a banner year for Colorado in the highly competitive state rankings arena. Genome Technology’s June publication ranks Colorado as one of the top 20 biotech locations in the world, and the Families USA Global Health Initiative Report ranked Colorado fourth among states that generated the most economic activity per dollar of funding from the NIH. Colorado Biosciences Get Boost, Advancing Major Economic Development Program
The Colorado House gave a big boost to a critical economic development project on Tuesday. A bill expanding Colorado’s much lauded Bioscience Discoveries Grant Program passed the House by an initial voice vote. House Bill 1001, sponsored by State Representative Jim Riesberg (D-Greeley), will make $26.5 million available in grants over the next five years. HB 1001 will provide as much as $150,000 per project to Colorado research institutions, accelerating the development of new technologies. - February 28, 2008

Colorado Bioscience Association Showcases the State’s Most Promising Technologies
Colorado research institutions have begun reaping the rewards of legislation allocating state funds for bioscience research. HB 1360, sponsored by Representative Jim Reisberg (D-Greeley) and Senator Ron Tupa (D-Boulder), was signed into law by Governor Bill Owens last summer. $2 million in state funds was awarded to 27 bioscience proof of concept projects at six Colorado universities and research institutions. InViragen, LLC, a biotechnology company dedicated to developing vaccines for emerging infectious diseases worldwide, has entered into an Exclusive Patent License Agreement with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The licensed technology is applicable to vaccines against multiple viral diseases, including dengue fever and West Nile disease.
