Bedford, United Kingdom, October 01, 2008 --(PR.com
)-- Gravitational or Stasis Eczema affects thousands of adults each year, particularly the elderly. Itchy lower legs with dry flaking skin can be easily damaged by scratching and this can lead to leg ulcers which are both time consuming and costly to heal. In the UK the National Health Service spends millions of Pounds and thousands of nursing hours trying to treat and prevent leg ulcers.
Now a specialist medical textile company, Espere Healthcare, based in Bedford has modified their DermaSilk Clothing technology to make a fine, long sock made from Medical Grade Silk which not only helps to control the itch and overheating associated with gravitational eczema but has the additional protective effect of assisting in the application and removal of Compression Hosiery, commonly used in this condition.
"Patient compliance is particularly poor with compression socks," says Espere's Chris Steeples. "Many patients just stop wearing them because they are so tight and so difficult to get on. Putting a DermaSilk Heel-Less undersock on the leg first creates a smooth surface so that the compression hosiery just glides on and off with ease - even when arthritis affects the grip".
From October 1st 2008 these garment will join a priviliged list of DermaSilk children's body suits and gloves by being made available for Doctor and Nurse prescribing at NHS expense.
"This is fantastic news for the company, but moreso for the patients who will benefit" says Chris. "If DermaSilk can help a new group of patients by reducing the itch of gravitational eczema and alo improve compliance in the use of compression hosiery then, hopefully, we can reduce the burden of ulcer care in the UK and free up NHS resources for other needy areas".
