Saving the Planet? It’s All Part of the Service

Cloud computing will lead to worldwide drop in carbon emissions.

Worcester, United Kingdom, November 23, 2008 --(PR.com)-- Internet services could bring carbon emissions in line with global targets, says one web services firm.

Research conducted by Postcode Anywhere shows new route optimization software, which plans shorter and quicker journeys, could cut yearly US carbon emissions by 150 million tons.

CEO Guy Mucklow said: “This sort of technology cuts carbon emissions by almost a quarter in the haulage industry, but has until now only been available for companies with a spare $100,000 for the licence.

“Most small businesses can’t afford that. Our service not only starts at a few cents per use but is actually more efficient, with emissions being cut by almost a third in some cases.

“There are two massive issues at play here: the credit crunch and the environment. Not only are we destroying the planet, we’re paying through the nose for the privilege.

“Hauliers need to plot complex routes when making deliveries, and trying to work it out in your head, sticking pins in a map, using standard route planners or sat-nav devices leads to overlong routes, wasted petrol and excess carbon emissions.

“Our new software doesn’t just plan any route - it plans the fastest route - along any number of waypoints, for any number of vehicles in a fleet, taking into account how wide the roads are and how heavy the loads are.

“Delivering these services over the Internet opens up the technology to many more users – so it could save the planet.”

Senior software developer Richard Geary said: “Postcode Anywhere is the first to deliver route optimization software as a pay-per-use service over the Internet.

“Our conservative estimates suggest that the US alone could cut CO2 levels by 150 million tons a year – that’s five times the amount produced by America’s largest single producer of CO2, the Scherer power plant in Georgia.

“Add that to the hundreds of millions of dollars to be saved at the pumps and the decision to route-optimise is a no-brainer. Hauliers can save hundreds of dollars per trip for a look-up fee of pennies. Over a year – well, you do the math.”

Route optimization is a sophisticated technology with the aim of calculating the shortest possible route along any number of stopping-off points. This so-called “travelling salesman” problem is a riddle that has perplexed schoolchildren and mathematicians alike for centuries.
