Help for Hard Times: New Book Shows How to Trim the Fat--Off Food Budgets

Walnut Creek, CA, December 05, 2008 --(PR.com)-- First, eating locally gave birth to the phenomenon of the “locavore.” Now, record high food prices are putting the cost of sustenance front and center. Enter the econovore—out to pare down the money spent each week on everything from apples to Zinfandel. And a new book from author Elise Cooke makes doing so simple, fun and healthy, to boot.

“Strategic Eating: The Econovore’s Essential Guide,” just published by Outskirts Press, gives consumers dozens of easy techniques to cut literally hundreds of dollars from the food budget every month. The first part of the book provides tips and methods for acquiring food cheaply, and sometimes even for free. The second part details how to prepare delicious meals with little time, effort and energy. Most importantly, with dozens of flexible recipes or “flexipes” to choose from, there’s no monotony and no waste. (Readers will even find the “Top 10 Uses for Dead Bread.”)

“Strategic Eating” is the first book from Simpleton Solutions, the company Cooke started to help people cope in the current tough economic times. Indeed, the offering comes just in time for consumers struggling with the double whammy of a recession and rising food prices. The U.S. Agriculture Department recently reported food prices at the commodity level had risen 130 percent from January 2002 through January 2008. Last year alone, food costs in the closely watched Consumer Price Index spiked 7 percent, the fastest rate in 17 years, according to a recent report. And econovores reap other benefits, too, such as reduced gasoline and energy use. With an economy in free fall, that’s a winning recipe.

“Spending less money on food is an easier change than just about any other spending category in a typical household,” says Cooke, a self-described “lifelong tightwad.” “The savings are not trivial, either; following the strategies detailed in the book can make a difference of hundreds of dollars a month and, ironically, nutrition will likely improve along the way.”

In keeping with the spirit of the company’s goals, Cooke has started a free Web site at SimpletonSolutions.com where anyone can offer tips, tools and support for a less expensive lifestyle. Readers are encouraged to weigh in with their opinions, money- and time-saving strategies, and success stories.

“Strategic Eating: The Econovore’s Essential Guide” is now available through Ingram, Baker & Taylor, Amazon.com, barnesandnoble.com, and the online bookstore of Outskirts Press, at outskirtspress.com/store.php.

About the Author: Elise Cooke started researching money-saving topics in earnest when she left her clean, well-compensated professional career as a software engineer to pursue the more rewarding but decidedly under-funded long hours of motherhood. What began as an individual pursuit borne of necessity has evolved into an engrossing hobby with over a decade of accumulated knowledge, and lots of friends. Her next book, “The Grocery Garden: How Busy People Can Grow Cheap Food,” is coming soon.
