Buena Vista CERT (Walnut Creek) Drill on 5/30 to Include Emergency Animal Shelter

On May 30th, Buena Vista CERT (Community Emergency Response Team) will hold a drill at Larkey Park in Walnut Creek. One element of the drill is to set up an emergency animal shelter to assist animal owners in case of an evacuation during a disaster.

Walnut Creek, CA, May 08, 2009 --(PR.com)-- What: Buena Vista (walnut Creek) Community Emergency Response Team Drill
When: 5/30/2009
Where: Laney Park, Walnut Creek (see directions below)
Who: Walnut Creek CERT members with the assistance of Lamorinda DART and Noah's Wish volunteers

Lamorinda DART (Disaster Animal Response Team) members and Noah's Wish volunteers will help Buena Vista CERT animal handlers in setting up an emergency animal shelter at the Tennis Courts in Larkey Park (near Geary Road in Walnut Creek). This is an exciting opportunity to see first hand how local emergency responders are implementing federal and state mandates such as the PETS Act of 2006 and A.B. 450 (2006). These laws were a response to Hurricane Katrina and require that emergency planners prepare to evacuate people with their animals in case of a disaster.

The drill also provides Walnut Creek residents with an opportunity to see their Community Emergency Response Team in action. They hope and expect that many of them will join Walnut Creek CERT to help build a better first response infrastructure.

About Lamorinda DART

Lamorinda DART (Disaster Animal Response Team) represents a new and exciting response to issues surrounding animals in disasters. Traditionally, Community Emergency Response Teams (CERT) take care of human animals only. After the passage of the PETS Act of 2006 (Pets Evacuation and Transportation Standards Act) little has changed, even though the PETS Act requires that FEMA sponsored or subsidized entities (such as CERT) take domestic pets and their owners into account. In the absence of adequate animal disaster response many animals (and some of their owners) perish, even today.

Lamorinda DART (Disaster Animal Response Team) consists of Lamorinda CERT (Community Emergency Response Team) graduates from Lafayette, Moraga and Orinda, who have received additional animal sheltering and rescue training and are able to provide disaster response to all animals (human and others). As first responders Lamorinda DART members are in a unique position to save both human and animal lives and prevent unnecessary suffering when the next disaster happens.
