Declining Mexico Tourism Means Huge Travel Discounts

Declining tourist numbers to Mexico, due to the flu and increased crime mean huge travel discounts are available. No crowds at almost empty resorts make Mexico a private playground. Travel discounts up to 70% and two for one deals at restaurants and nightclubs.

Vancouver, WA, May 09, 2009 --(PR.com)-- Mexico’s tourism industry was in crisis over a drug war even before swine flu outbreak. Tourists have been struggling with fears that Mexico is too risky to visit. Truth be told now is an excellent time for travel to Mexico. The discounts are huge and you will find no crowds and small lines at popular tourist destinations.

The Mexico tourism industry is down 7.5 percent over the same period in 2008, the tourism ministry said in a statement and that number may fall as much as 43 percent to $7.58 billion this year as international travel collapses on fear of the flu and violence, Tourism Minister Rodolfo Elizondo said in a May 2 interview on Radio Formula.

Visitors from abroad, who added $13.3 billion to the economy in 2008, are Mexico’s third-largest source of foreign currency behind oil exports and remittances from Mexicans who live abroad.

The top destination, Cancun has lost an estimated $2.4 million in the past week as occupancy dropped 40 percent below usual levels for this time of year, said Rodrigo de la Pena, president of the Cancun Hotel Association. "It's imperative that our hotels have tourists," Pena said. "We are in a serious economic crisis."

The Pacific coast resort of Huatulco saw occupancy rates drop by 46 percent, according to the department. Perhaps worst hit was Mexico City, where approximately 85 percent of hotel rooms are now empty.

Olivia Gutierrez, a receptionist at a Mexico City hotel operated by NH Hoteles SA, Spain’s largest publicly traded hotelier, said two of every seven guests had canceled their reservations and that the hotel was 32 percent full.

Cruise ships lines have canceled about 64 port calls in Mexico that would have brought an estimated 134,000 tourists to Mexico.

Mexico businesses are doing everything they can to woo tourists. Restaurants are offering two-for-one dinners and nightclubs offer two-for-one drinks, while handicraft stores have $1 specials on dolls and necklaces. Many resorts and hotels are advertising discounts of up to 70%.
