Great Rail Journeys Recognised for Their Commitment to the Environment

Great Rail Journeys, , the UK’s largest operator of holidays by rail, have been awarded a 4 star status by The Association of Independent Travel Operators.

London, United Kingdom, May 15, 2009 --(PR.com)-- Great Rail Journeys have been awarded a 4 star status by The Association of Independent Travel Operators (AITO) for their dedication to providing environmentally friendly holidays and business practices.

AITO awards companies a rating of 1 to 5 stars depending on how successfully they fulfil a number of policies regarding responsible tourism and environmental practise. The 4 star ranking was awarded to Great Rail Journeys, the UK’s largest operator of holidays by rail, because of its success in implementing green policies.

Great Rail Journeys uses train travel whenever possible in their tours due to it being ecologically friendly. Journeys by rail offer people the possibility of exploring vast distances and an array of cultures with a much smaller carbon footprint than flying. If customers book a European tour they can travel across the continent by train, allowing them to enjoy incredible experiences with a much lower impact on the environment than flying.

Customers who book a worldwide journey which includes a flight are offered the chance to offset their carbon footprint by making a donation to Climate Care. The donations will neutralise the carbon emissions of your flight by contributing towards forest restoration, energy efficiency projects or researching renewable energy.

The company’s responsible tourism policy is put into practise at their head office by minimising pollution, being energy efficient and recycling. All of Great Rail Journey’s brochures are produced by companies which are approved by the Forest Stewardship Council, which supports responsible forestry. An interactive brochure section was also included on their recently redesigned website, which further reduces the amount of paper used.

Great Rail Journeys also works hard to support the local communities and cultures of the destinations their tours visit. This includes using hotels run by local families whenever possible.
