Legion of Mary Recruiting Drive at St. Gregory's Catholic Church

Virginia Beach, VA, September 08, 2006 --(PR.com)-- On September 10, 2006, the Legion of Mary will be holding a recruiting drive to at St. Gregory the Great Catholic Church in Virginia Beach, VA.

The Legion of Mary is a lay Catholic organization devoted to Jesus through Mary. Active members of the Legion of Mary attend a weekly meeting, say prayers, and do a weekly work assignment. At the request of Fr. Mario work assignments include: welcoming new parishioners, visiting nursing homes, visiting parish families, going door-to-door to make friends with the people in Virginia Beach and welcome them to worship with us, and other important works.

The Legion of Mary meetings begin with a Rosary. They continue with a discussion of works done and other matters. They are filled with prayer and a friendly, family-like atmosphere. The meetings are strictly limited to being no longer than 90 minutes each week.

It should be noted, that while some think of the Legion of Mary as just for young, single adults in their 20s or 30s, that the Legion of Mary is open to people of every age. A funny story is that of the founder of the Legion of Mary. Frank Duff lived to be in his 90s. One day he was walking out of Mass when a member of a junior group (for those under 18 years old) of the Legion of Mary came up and asked him if he wanted to join the Legion of Mary as an auxiliary member (a member who prays, but does not do an active work). Frank Duff asked the child, “Why can I not become an active member.” The child said to him, “Because you are too old.” Frank Duff simply responded, “Well, my name is Frank Duff.” There are a number of members in the Legion of Mary who have joined in their 40s, 50s, 60s, 70s, 80s, and even 90s. Thus, please feel welcome to come no matter what your age.

St. Gregory’s has two Legion of Mary Groups and is starting a third group. The two existing group are for adults over 18. One meets at 9:00am on Wednesdays; the other at 7:00pm on Mondays. Both meet in the Tobias room. A new group for those under 18 is starting.
