Survey Says Young People Skipping Beaches of Mexico for Europe Spring Break

A survey conducted by STA Travel found that among those who are planning to travel for Spring Break, Europe tops Mexico by a wide margin as the preferred destination.

Lewisville, TX, February 12, 2010 --(PR.com)-- Plans of 2010 Spring Break Travelers:

60 percent Plan to Travel
34 percent are Opting for Europe
69 percent plan to Spend Less Than $599

A survey conducted by STA Travel – a global travel specialist helping students, young professionals and teachers travel the globe – found that among those who are planning to travel for Spring Break, Europe tops Mexico by a wide margin as the preferred destination.

Just 10 percent of respondents reported Mexico as their planned destination for 2010, with 34 percent of those planning to travel favoring a trip to Europe for their break.

“What you’re seeing is a more globally-focused generation than in the past and they want to use their time off to soak up the culture of Europe rather than the sun of Mexico,” said James Bell, STA Travel Commercial VP. “In 2009, more than half of our survey respondents wanted to lounge on the beaches of Mexico and the Caribbean.”

In 2009, more than half of all travelers who booked a Spring Break trip through STA, opted for a domestic destination, with 25 percent opting for non-European international destinations, including Jamaica and Cancun, and 22 percent heading to Europe

Booking Later, Spending Less

The majority of those surveyed responded that they still planned to travel for Spring Break, but planned to spend less. Of those planning to travel, 68 percent said they planned to spend less than $599 on their trip, while 76 percent responded in 2009 that they planned to spend around $500 to $1000 on their trip.

“We’re really seeing a shift toward value for Spring Break. Young people are searching for the travel providers that cater to them and offer them a break on their travel,” said James Bell, STA Travel Commercial VP.

In 2009, the average Spring Break traveler who booked a trip with STA Travel spent $1,100.

The Undecideds

While 60 percent of respondents plan to travel for Spring Break in 2010, 33 percent are still undecided. For those still on the fence, the price of travel and their work schedule were cited as the main reasons why they might not travel. Seventy-five percent of the undecided respondents cited the price of a Spring Break trip as the most important factor in their decision whether to travel or not.
